UC Irvine Anteaters
UC Irvine tied Hawaii for the regular season Big West title but lost before reaching the conference tourney finals. They have advanced this far by beating North Dakota, Lafayette and Coastal Carolina. The first two by a combined 4 points.
The Anteaters have one of the most intimidating players in the game in 7’6″ center Mamadou Ndiaye. The junior has filled out his body and his game each year and can dominate from time to time.
Needless to say the Lions don’t have someone that size.
Ndiaye is second on the team in scoring to Luke Nelson. Nelson averages just 13ppg and seems to lack the kind of consistency you would want but he has 6 20+point games over the season.
With Ndiaye acting as an eraser at the rim the Anteaters are content to play at a slow pace. The key will be who sets the tempo.
Columbia Lions
Columbia finished third in the Ivy League this season. They advanced to the CIT Finals by virtue of beating Norfolk State, Ball State and New Jersey Tech. Hardly a who’s who of hardwood programs.
First off the Lions have one player who is close to the size of Ndiaye in Connor Voss – who is 7’1″. He is averaging 1ppg and has not been used much this season. You have to think they throw him out there to see if he can impact the game.
The Lions top scorer is Maodo Lo. The senior from Germany is an established threat at 17ppg . He is coming off his best game of the year with 29 against NJIT.
Columbia is solid in all facets of the game but it is hard to tell good their numbers are because they are not always playing against the best competition. They lost twice to Yale and neither were close.
