Things were expected to fall into this tournament for the Cougars, who likely needed a tourney win to get into the NCAA Tournament. That dream ended with a shootout against Gonzaga that saw them on the short end.

The Blazers ran away with C-USA in the regular season, at least giving them a spot here in the NIT.
However, they had their sights set on running through the tournament and really pushing for that cinderella type story in the March. Those plans came to a crashing halt against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

The Blazers split the season series with the Hilltoppers in the regular season, but trailed by as many as 21 in the 2nd half as they built a gap they couldn’t make up. With that, the non conference resume just wasn’t enough to get them in.
UAB will now look to pull off an upset in the first round of the NIT and it will have to come from their offensive firepower. The Blazers averaged over 77 points per game and that starts with Robert Brown. The guard leads the team with an average of 13.5 points per game.
BYU Cougars
BYU finished 23-10 on the season and 3rd in the regular season in conference play behind Gonzaga and St. Mary’s. However, their resume was just simply not good enough to compete with others.
The Cougars had no quality wins to add to their resume, forcing them to perform well in the conference tourney. They took Gonzaga to the brink in an absolute shootout, but eventually fell 88-84, ending their NCAA Tournament hopes.
BYU is likely to turn this into a shootout here. They average 85.3 points per home game on the season and aren’t shy about hoisting. The Cougars have also played much better defense at home.
