Texas Tech Red Raiders
Since Big-12 play starts on Wednesday, it’s worth mentioning that the last team to finish with a better regular season conference record than Kansas was Oklahoma State in 2004, when it had Tony Allen, John Lucas and Joey Graham.
Kansas has won at least a share of the regular season conference title for fourteen years running and it is, by most all metrics, the best team in the conference again this year.

By most of those same metrics, Texas Tech immediately follows. The Red Raiders led the Big-12 for some weeks last season before Keenan Evans got hurt. Evans came back in time to contribute to an Elite Eight run, though.
Both he and Zhaire Smith are gone. Jarrett Culver remains (and is dropping nearly 20 a game) and two senior transfers have picked up the slack: Matt Mooney, who averaged close to nineteen per at South Dakota last season and the 6’10” Tariq Owens from St. John’s.
And no other team in all of Division-1 has forced its opponents into a lower shooting percentage than Texas Tech, which has held its first dozen opponents to 32.8 percent from the field.
West Virginia Mountaineers
West Virginia began the season ranked #13 but then lost at home, in overtime, to a terrific Buffalo team.
Still the loss was enough for WVU to fall all the way out of the Top-25 and losses followed to Western Kentucky, Florida and Rhode Island, all on neutral floors.

WVU made the Sweet Sixteen a season ago but lost Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles; so its situation isn’t wildly different than Tech’s. The Mountaineers retained their next four most important players but didn’t bring in an impact transfer.
They did just recently welcome freshman Derek Culver back from an injury that held him out until Dec. 22. The 85th-ranked freshman in the class of 2018 went for eleven points and eleven rebounds in his second game back (and WVU’s most recent) against Lehigh.

Free Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. West Virginia Mountaineers NCAAB Prediction: both offenses struggle and WVU keeps it close.
Still no students back so the crowd will be mildly subdued, considering its the first game of the Big-12 schedule. I see this game being an defensive struggle, though the pace will dictate how high the score gets. I also think West Virginia will play one of its better games of the season, past or future, before eventually finishing somewhere in the bottom half of the standings.
