Texas Tech Red Raiders
Texas Tech defeated Purdue by 13 on Friday night to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history. Purdue led for most of the first half but Tech caught it right at the end and then slowly took control in the second 20 minutes.
Tech is underwhelming, especially when you consider it to be at an Elite Eight level. It doesn’t do anything that really wows you but Chris Beard’s team is one of the last eight standing because of its balance and Keenan Evans.
Evans was even quieter than usual on Friday night, scoring 16 but didn’t make any highlight reel plays. He will likely see Jalen Brunson, a terrific defender but one who is 1) usually defending the opposing point guard and 2) just chased Jevon Carter all over the TD Garden floor on Friday night.
If Tech is going to win this game, Evans must go off.
Villanova won and covered its third in a row in the East Region. It was locked in a tight game with West Virginia for all of the first half and a lot of the second but foul trouble down the stretch hindered the Mountaineers, who just ran out of gas.
Brunson had 27 to lead the game. He also played lockdown defense on Jevon Carter, holding him to just 12. He might not look like the best NBA prospect, but he sure looks like the most valuable player left in this tournament.
I’m assuming he guards Evans because the sizes matchup and Brunson is a terrific defender. Jay Wright has options, though, including throwing the longer Mikal Bridges on Evans.
Bridges isn’t as quick and usually has to guard a bigger guy because ‘Nova plays only one big guy, but he could be a trick up the Head Coach’s sleeve if Evans is hurting ‘Nova with the catch-and-shoot.

Whereas Tech doesn’t really impress you anywhere, Villanova impresses you everywhere. Two balanced teams but one is just much more talented than the other. This should be another double-digit win for ‘Nova.
