Stanford Cardinal
It took Jerod Haase three seasons to get his program out from underneath the weight of eight unspectacular seasons under his predecessor, Head Coach Johnny Dawkins, but here in the fourth Stanford is flying.

Haase grew up in Golden Bear territory and began his playing career at Cal before transferring to Kansas, where he was a captain and started 99 of 101 games, going 89–13 (wikipedia.org).
One senior has played a total of twenty-two minutes on this team. The wave of talent Haase has recruited to Stanford has hit land and West Coast hoopsters are taking notice.
The Cardinal ranks eighth in the country in three-point shooting percentage thanks to two of the best in the game. Tyrell Terry and Spencer Jones, just two freshmen from Minneapolis and Kansas, respectively, combine to average 5.1 makes on 11.4 attempts per game (.447).
Plus it defends. Opponents are shooting .387 overall and .376 in the Pac-12. What’s not to love?
California Golden Bears
Cal’s new Head Coach Mark Fox broke onto the scene at Nevada, where he won four consecutive Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Regular Year Championships and made three NCAA Tournaments.
The only year in which he didn’t lead his Wolf Pack to the WAC Title was his last, when he bolted for the University of Georgia.
That was a promotion. His move to Cal was more of a horizontal move. He was lukewarm at UGA with two NCAA appearances in nine seasons. His NBA pride and joy would be Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who came in as the #15 recruit in the class of 2011 and went on to be the eighth overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft.
His new team out west has done a good job defending its home floor this season. Cal has wins over Washington and Washington State at Haas Pavilion and got through the non-conference with just one slip-up against Saint Mary’s.
