This is round one between the WCC heavyweights. Both of whom are off to a great start.
St. Mary’s broke a long losing streak to Gonzaga last year by beating them twice during the regular season. However, they could not beat them in the WCC tournament.
Gonzaga is looking really good this season – they have been perfect. This is one of the few challenges left on their schedule.
St. Mary’s Gaels
You can’t look at the Gaels without noticing their experience. They are a rarity in that they almost never rely on freshmen.
They simply hope to find the right kids for their system and develop them…and they do a really good job of that.
The latest example is Jock Landale, who has evolved into one of the most productive big men in the country. He is going to need to be big and play big as Gonzaga has a ton of size.

Calvin Hermanson is another key player. He is second on the team in scoring and is coming off a season high 27 points in just 23 minutes against Portland.
Scoring is going to be key. Even though SMC has the second best defense in the country they are going to have to score with the Zags to win.
This is a huge opportunity for the Gaels, who were notable for missing March Madness last year. A second consecutive win at the Kennel will force people to take notice.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Guilty, I always fall in the love the with the Zags. There is usually good reason and this season there is especially good reason. They are undefeated and honestly have a great shot at staying that way.
Last year a lot of their production came up front but this season they are more balanced. Nigel Williams-Goss was definitely worth the wait and has been getting better as the season progresses. Last week he dropeed 36 points on San Francisco on the road, with 11 boards.

Four other player average between 10 and 12ppg including Jordan Matthews, a grad transfer from Cal who is better outside the arc than within it. They have five players 6’10” or taller to bother Lonsdale.
SMC had their number last year except when it mattered the most. This season I am expecting thing to get back to normal.
