The Red Storm have a promising future but for right now they are young and inconsistent.
Creighton suffered a huge injury blow and has lost some games of late but they have all been to pretty good teams.
The Bluejays look like a lock for the Tournament but they have prove they are still capable of being a factor.
St. John’s Red Storm
You can see how the SJU program could definitely be a factor in the league in the years to come. They have some burgeoning talent.
All three of their double-digit scorers are in their first years and none looks like a one and done kind of player so their future is bright for next year.
Atop that list is Shamorie Ponds. He is lightning quick and can shoot and at just 6’1″ he is averaging close to 5 rebounds per game. As his game gets more efficient the team will improve.
Marcus LoVett has a very similar profile. He was on campus last year but didn’t play and this year his shooting is a little better than Ponds, they have a great future together.
Bashir Ahmed is the third member of the trio. He is a long athletic wing who needs to improve his percentages. He could have the most upside of the group though.
SJU is a perimeter oriented team but transfer center Tariq Owens makes sure they protect the rim. He and Kassoum Yakwe average 2 blocks per game.
Creighton Bluejays
The Bluejays are definitely going through some pains right now after losing their starting point guard for the season. Let’s see if they can get themselves straightened out.
Justin Patton was shooting up NBA draft boards but he has not been as much of a factor without the steady influence of Maurice Watson. Still this is a good matchup for the 7 footer as he should not be pushed too hard inside on defense. He was terrible against Villanova in their last game.
When he is not a contributor that puts a lot of pressure on Marcus Foster. I have always liked Foster’s game and he is the leading scorer at 18ppg but he is best when he can pick his spot and not have to force things.
At full strength this matchup would be all Creighton but their struggles is creating doubt across the board, especially within themselves.
