A couple of talented, yet flawed, teams from power conferences get together on Wednesday night to determine who will move on to play Buffalo in Tulsa.
St. John’s and Arizona State lock up in the final First Four game from Dayton on Wednesday night, the winner to take the 11-seed in the West Region.
St. John’s Red Storm
St. John’s started the season 12–0 and that strong non-conference record went a long way to the Johnnies even getting a chance to play their way into the field of 64.
The Red Storm beat Bowling Green; it won at Rutgers; and it beat VCU. Then the Big East schedule started the Chris Mullin’s team hit a serious wall.
St. John’s finished seventh in the Big East at 8–10, below teams like Georgetown, Creighton, and Xavier, who didn’t make the NCAA Tournament.
The Red Storm got the nod because it beat Marquette twice and Villanova once. Those wins bolstered a resume with smears all over it, including two double-digit losses to both DePaul and Providence. The Johnnies also lost by 30 to Duke and got whacked in the conference tournament by Marquette, which sort of negated the previous two wins over the Golden Eagles.
St. John’s went just 7–11 over its final 18 games but it does have Shamorie Ponds, who scored an efficient 19.5 points per game this season and averaged over five assists to just two turnovers per game. He’s a game-changer and absolutely must be at his best for St. John’s to be relevant in this tournament; he’s the reason it’s here.
Arizona State Sun Devils
Arizona State lost in the First Four last year and the only reason it was there was the same sort of reason it’s there again this season: the non-conference.
Like St. John’s, ASU started well this season before slipping up in conference play. It beat Mississippi State, Utah State, and Kansas in the non-conference but disappointed just a bit with a 12–6 record in a conference some expected it to assert itself in a little more.
A freshman leads the scoring for Bobby Hurley but four guys are in double-figures: a freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior.
Zylan Cheatham is the senior and the x-factor. He averages a double-double at 6’8″ with some 3-point range. He can disappear for long stretches of time, though. If he’s active, ASU has the advantage.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Under is 18-6 in SJU last 24 games as an underdog.
- Over is 10-4 in SJU last 14 non-conference games.
- ASU are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 vs. Big East.
Free St. John’s Red Storm vs. Arizona State Sun Devils NCAAB Prediction: ASU outlasts SJU.
I think Arizona State is the deeper team with the better coach. Plus, it was there last season and has some extra motivation to dance a little longer this time around. I’ll take the Sun Devils to win what should be a fun, up-and-down ball game.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Arizona State -1
