A spot in The Basketball Classic FInals is on the line as the T-Birds and Bulldogs play the second of two semifinal games on Monday night in Fresno, CA. What started as a proposed 32-team post-season tournament ended up being reduced to 18 programs accepting invitations to the event which is now down to the Final Four. It may not be the most coveted title in the land but neither of these head coaches would tell you that a trophy here can certainly help build towards next year’s campaign.
The Thunderbirds had to start back in round 1 and have needed 3 wins to land in this inaugural TBC semifinal affair. The offense has been in sync and grooving averaging 80.6 PPG having won 2 home games and now needing a second road win to advance to the championship game.
The Bulldog offense has also scored at least 80 points in both of their TBC outings as they have enjoyed hosting all 3 games they have played to this point. An 83 – 74 win over Eastern Washington was followed up with an 80 – 71 victory over Youngstown State leaving Fresno State a win away from a chance at their second post-season title in team history. The Bulldogs won the 1983 NIT but have never advanced past the Sweet 16 of the big NCAA Tournament.
Southern Utah Thunderbirds
I thought the Portland vs. Southern Utah game would be a high-scoring affair as you see from my post about that quarterfinal affair the other night. That over was set way up high at 155 and it fell short even though the T-Birds landed 77 points against the Pilots to earn their way here to the semis.
The Thunderbirds are the only team who has had to play 3 outings to get here starting as a first-four team in the 18-team alignment.
The T-Birds have had 3 different leading scorers lead the way from their 3 tournament wins distributing the scoring nicely coming together at the right time of the year, In the opening win over Kent State, Dre Marin came away with a 27-point effort and he is the 4th-leading scorer on this team averaging 11 PPG.
Nick Fleming snatched 18 points in the win over UTEP and he was one of five T-Birds that came away with double-digit nights in the 82 – 69 win over the Miners. Jordan Knight III plowed his way to a 20-point showing in the win over Portland last time out and they’ve been doing all of this without their leading scorer, Tevian Jones. Jones came out of the Montana State game on March 1 and the wrist injury has him down for the season which takes his senior leadership and 14.6 PPG off the court.
Despite losing Jones, Maizen Fausett has at least been landing 9 points a game lately which he had done in 4 of his last 5 games as well as one 19=point effort in the Big Sky Tournament QF against Portland State.
Fresno State Bulldogs
The only hardware in the Fresno State Bulldog showcase came from their 1983 NIT Championship season but they could hoist the first-ever TBC trophy this season. Having home-court advantage is always a good thing and the line setters are pointing to an easy win for Fresno State listing them as 8-point chalk.
In the opening tournament game against Eastern Washington, the Bulldogs carried a 14-point halftime lead to an 83 – 74 win. Fresno State had 4 players land double-digits although their leading scorer Orlando Robinson was held to 13 points on an off-shooting night. Robinson usually finds his way to 20 points a game as his average is at 19.4 with his name pinned all over the team’s home page for having another stellar outing.
Robinson rebounded from that effort with 16 points and 13 boards but it still hails in comparison to what the dude did in his 3 MWC tournament affairs. His effort over those 3 games is likely how this team even got invited here and yet here they are a game away from a title appearance. That 34-point effort against Wyoming was fucking stupid!
Anyway, Robinson isn’t surrounded by a wealth of offensive talent despite what they have done as a team to get here to the semis. We are talking about a Big Sky program and Youngstown who aren’t exactly going to shut anyone down so it is to be taken in context.
Isaiah Hil is the only other player averaging double-digits and he is just above the line at 10.1 PPG. Anthony Holland is just under the mark at 9.6 PPG and Leo Colimerio has suddenly found himself contributing with 23 points and 16 rebounds over these last two tournament games.

Free Southern Utah Thunderbirds vs. Fresno State Bulldogs NCAAB Betting Prediction:
Luckily, we don;t have to chase that high of a total this time because I do believe these two will produce a game in the 140s, at least. I also expect the T-Birds to cover the 8 so go with it.
