Southern Methodist Mustangs
Through seven games, Southern Methodist has the best offense in the American Athletic Conference with the best shooting percentage from both two and three.
Since losing back-to-back road games, SMU has won three in a row — two blowouts of Temple and East Carolina followed by a win at Memphis over the weekend.

Memphis has one of the best defenses in the country but SMU’s league-leading offense got the best of it.
Kendric Davis, who missed the first four games of the season, led the scoring with twenty. He’s hit double-figures in all but one of his fifteen games played this season. Three more Mustangs finished in double-digits and four guys hit multiple threes.
There isn’t a senior on the roster and only one freshman has appeared in most of SMU’s games and he only plays limited minutes.
Everyone else is either a sophomore or a junior. The top four guys do most of the heavy lifting for the ‘Stangs. All four average over a dozen points per game and at least four rebounds. Three of the four average multiple dimes per game. Davis is the leader in that category with over seven per.
Cincinnati Bearcats
Cincinnati is tied with both SMU and Wichita State for third place in the AAC at 5–2, a game behind both Houston and Tulsa, which have both started 6–1.
The Bearcats beat Tulsa by thirty-one in the second week of January. Its two losses in the conference have come on the road, at Tulane and at Memphis. It has won two in a row, vs East Carolina and at Temple.
Junior center Chris Vogt put up modest numbers in limited playing time in his first two seasons at Northern Kentucky. He transferred to Cincinnati in time to play this season without missing any time and he’s putting up bigger numbers in more than twice the playing time he received last season for the Norse.
The 7’1” Vogt ranks second on the team with over thirteen points and six rebounds per game. His .687 field goal percentage is among the nation’s leaders.
After winning the conference’s player of the year award a season ago as a junior, Jarron Cumberland is taking four fewer field goal attempts per game as a senior and scoring four fewer points under new Head Coach John Brannen. He’s dishing out an extra assist every two games, though.
