The St. John’s Red Storm and the Seton Hall Pirates will meet for their annual meeting at Madison Square Garden this weekend. The Pirates were able to come away with an overtime victory at the Mecca last season.
HISTORY: There’s a lot of history surrounding these two borough based schools. Seton Hall and St. John’s all-time series dates back to 1907, and the Red Storm lead the all-time series 61-45.
St. John’s may be favored as hosts here.
Seton Hall Pirates
After storming out to a 9-1 start, Seton Hall has dropped four of their first six Big East games. All four losses have been by six points or less, and they enter on the heels of a tough one-point loss to Marquette on the road.
Seton Hall scores a solid 78.6 points per game, but they’ve struggled to knock down the three ball.
Jared Rhoden is thriving as the role as senior leader. The 6’6 swingman scored a season-high 25 points on the road against DePaul, and he’s got four double-doubled on the season. Rhoden leads SHU with 16.6 points per game and he grabs 6.8 rpg.
Bryce Aiken has brought more than book smarts over from Harvard, and the 6′ guard scored a season-high 28 points in the road loss to Marquette. Aiken has scored 20 or more points in four of his last five games, and he’s second on the team in scoring (14.5)
Myles Cale returned for a fifth season and he remains a key part of what the Pirates do. The 6’6 senior is a true glue guy, and he scores 8.7 ppg.
USF transfer Alexis Yetna had a monster game against the Golden Eagles, going for 15 points and 16 boards. The 6’8 frenchman leads the Pirates in rebounding (7.5), while scoring 9.7 ppg.
Kadary Richmond, a Syracuse transfer, joins Aiken in the backcourt. The 6’6 guard scored a career-high 27 points in with over UConn, and he’s averaging a solid 8.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg, and 3.4 apg.
St. John’s Red Storm
St. John’s wasn’t able to build much of a resume through non-conference play, with only wins over in-state foes Fordham and Monmouth standing out. The Red Storm have started conference play 2-4, dropping all four of their games on the road.
The Red Storm are one of the highest scoring teams in the nation at 81.3 ppg, good for 14th in the country.
Julian Champagnie leads the charge again after a breakthrough 2020 season. The 6’8 swingman scored a season-high 34 points and grabbed a career-best 16 boards in the win over DePaul, and he’s makes the Red Storm a threat to win every night. Champagnie is averaging a Big East-leading 21.2 ppg and a team-leading 7.0 rpg.
Posh Alexander compliments him well from the lead guard spot. The 6′ sophomore is quietly one of the best point guards in the country, and he plays an efficient, well-rounded, two-way game. Alexander is second on the team in scoring 15.5 ppg, while grabbing 4.7 rpg, and dishing out a team-leading 5.1 apg.
The NY-born guard also leads the Big East in steals (2.6). The pairing of Alexander and Dylan Addae-Wusu (10.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 4.6 apg) has given St. John’s strong backcourt play on both sides of the ball.
Transfer imports Montez Mathis (Rutgers) and Aaron Wheeler (Purdue) start up front and the latter is coming off a season-high 16 points against Creighton.
CBB Betting Trends:
- SHU is 6-4 ATS in their last 10 road games.
- SJU is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games.
- Over is 5-2 in Red Storm’s last 7 games.
Free Seton Hall Pirates vs. St. John’s Red Storm NCAAB Prediction: St. John’s to Cover
This battle of the Boroughs has the ingredients to turn into a high scoring affair.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: St. John’s -2.5
With talent on both sides capable of filling it up, we like both squads bringing their best to MSG and covering the over here. Julian Champagnie and Jared Rhoden have been going at it for four seasons, and a big game from both isn’t out of question. Neither team stars defensively, and we don’t think they begin to this weekend
Take the over for this Big East battle, and give St. John’s a look at MSG.
