Wednesday night Mountain West action will see the undefeated San Diego Aztecs take on the New Mexico Lobos.
San Diego State Aztecs
The Aztecs may not be the best team in the country, but they are darn well close given they have not lost a single game. They have cruised to a 10-0 conference record so far and will look to impress the committee with another away win.
San Diego State is not as good on offense as many may think, averaging just 74.5 points per game. This only ranks 102nd in the country. They are consistent however, averaging 72.1 points per road game. The same can be said in conference road games, as they have averaged 72.6 points in five games.
Malachi Flynn is by far the best player for the Aztecs this season. He averages 16.8 points per game. Right behind him is Yanni Wetzell, who averages 12 points per game. Matt Mitchell averages 11.1 points per game, but other than these three guys, the rest of the Aztecs average 9.8 points or lower.

Now defensively is where the Aztecs have dominated all season. This is why they are the only undefeated team in the country. They just do not let their opponent ever get comfortable which in turn allows them to lock down everyone. A crazy stat shows that the Aztecs have not allowed more than 73 points in a game this season. Furthermore, their opponents have scored 70 or more in just two games.
This means they allow just 57.2 points per game. That is the 4th best scoring defense in the country. Teams only shoot 37% against them from the field and 27.5% from the three-point line.
New Mexico Lobos
The Lobos have an impressive overall record, but knowing that they are just 5-4 in conference play should be concerning. They just got demolished by Nevada, losing by a score of 96-76. This was a game where their top scorer was out due to injury and we see what the defense allowed.
Now offensively, the Lobos have been great, averaging 80 points per game. This is the 18th best scoring offense in the country. The Lobos also shoot the ball extremely well from the field, averaging 49.4%. That marks the 6th best shooting percentage in the the country. However, they do not shoot the three ball well at all, averaging 33.7%.
JaQuan Lyle, the leading scorer for New Mexico, is averaging 17.1 points per game. As mentioned, he did not play in the game against Nevada because of a knee injury. His status remains hazy, which leads me to believe that the Lobos are going to have plenty of struggles scoring the basketball.
While the offense has done their share, defense has been terrible. They are allowing 75.5 points per game. I mean they just allowed a below average Nevada team to drop 96 points on them, so what can we really expect from them here?
It should be noted that the Lobos allow just 68.2 points per game in home conference games this year, so there is a chance we will see them step up against one of the best teams in the country.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Under is 13-6 in SDSU last 19 road games.
- SDSU are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 road games.
Free San Diego State Aztecs vs. New Mexico Lobos NCAAB Prediction:
I do not see the Aztecs losing anytime soon. Also, knowing that New Mexico’s best player is questionable leads me to believe that the Lobos are going to struggle offensively. That being said, I like the defense of San Diego State to dominate here and I like the under as my free pick.
