Saint Peter’s pulled the upset of the first round with its overtime victory over 2-seed Kentucky.
The monumental upset pits the Peacocks against the 31-win Murray State Racers of the Ohio Valley Conference.
This matchup guarantees there will be at least one Cinderella in the field when the Sweet 16 tips off next week.
Saint Peter’s Peacocks
There was not much fluky about Saint Peter’s 85–79 win over Kentucky on Thursday evening.
The Peacocks did shoot superbly from outside (9 for 17 from three) and Kentucky could have been better (4 of 15) but the Wildcats shot 35 free throws to Saint Peter’s 21.
Peter played either from ahead or even most of the game and then survived a five-minute overtime period after Kentucky made a comeback in regulation.
Darryl Banks III led Saint Peter’s with 27 points. Doug Edert scored 20 in 25 minutes off the bench. They were the only two in double-figures for the 18-point underdogs.
What became apparent for anybody watching Saint Peter’s for the first time on Thursday was that this is a tough, smart and disciplined team with a terrific head coach in Shaheen Holloway.
Teams like that do not bow out easily in the NCAA Tournament and if Saint Peter’s was not overwhelmed by Kentucky’s talent, it isn’t likely to be overwhelmed by Murray State’s.
Murray State Racers
That said, Murray State has a fair bit of talent and it won its 21st game in a row in the first round against San Francisco on Thursday, 92–87.
KJ Williams and Trae Hannibal led the scoring with 18 apiece. Three other Racers joined them in double-figures.
There is also a decidedly different atmosphere in the second round of the Tournament compared to the first.
The jitters are out, for the most part. Kentucky started the game tight against Saint Peter’s and was never able to get fully comfortable.
That is not likely to be the case in this one. Murray State must sense an opportunity with its biggest obstacle out of the way and it should play hard and fast from the jump, getting up and down the court like it does.
Saint Peter’s will do its best to slow this one down and play in the half court. If it can do that and knock down its three-pointers again, this will be a game.
