Radford Highlanders
Undefeated Winthrop met undefeated Radford in Big South Conference play on Monday and the Eagles came away with a road victory to take first command in the standings.
Winthrop shot six-of-twenty-seven from three-point range but Radford was worse, six-of-twenty-nine. Both teams were dismal from the free throw line, too. Radford went eight-of-fifteen and Winthrop eleven-of-twenty-three in the road win.

It was the sloppy, low-scoring game Radford prefers to play. The Highlanders aren’t a terribly talented offensive team, though junior guard Carlik Jones is terrific with a 19/5/5 line on efficient shooting numbers. As a team, however, Radford’s offensive numbers are underwhelming.
It has the best defense in the conference based on opponent shooting percentages and steals (thanks in large part to Jones, who averages a team high 1.4 steals per game in addition to all he does on the offensive end).
The loss to Belmont was Radford’s first loss since a nine-point defeat at Mississippi State on December 18. It is still in good shape; it has a rematch with Belmont on February 10 and, of course, the conference tournament, which is what really matters, at least as far as getting into the NCAA Tournament is concerned.
It also handed Presbytarian, which is tied with Radford at 5–1, its only loss on its home court. The Highlanders will host it for the second leg of the season series in the game after the Belmont rematch on February 13.
By all metrics, Radford is one of the two best teams in the conference. It and Belmont are the only two teams in the Big South ranked above average, nationally, in Sports-Reference’s Simple Rating System (SRS).
UNC Asheville Bulldogs
Radford is just a tenth of a point above average but UNC Asheville is more than seven-and-a-half points below.
There are other metrics that suggest Asheville isn’t so far behind the Highlanders, like simple net rating, which is the difference between a team’s offensive efficiency and defensive efficiency. Essentially, it is how much, on average, a team either outscores or gets outscored by its opponent. It doesn’t take into account strength of schedule, however.
According to net rating, the Bulldogs are just a few points behind the Highlanders but Radford played the more tougher non-conference schedule with games against Mississippi State and Northwestern (which it defeated).
What stands out on Asheville’s schedule is just how close its games have been of late. The last eight have all been decided by five points or fewer. It is 3–5 in those eight games and the last four losses have each come by exactly two points.
That can kill team morale or it can heighten a well-coached team’s focus. Asheville ought to take some extra free throws at the end of practice. It has shot worse than sixty-four percent from the line this season as a team, 330th in the country out of 353 Division I teams.
