Purdue ended its three-game losing streak with a win over Penn State on Saturday. It wasn’t easy; the Boilermakers didn’t have Vincent Edwards, who is as good as anybody they do have. Purdue won the second half by by seven to win the game by three.
The Boilermakers are now squarely on the two line. Lunardi think Kansas and Xavier have passed them and of course Michigan State is going to have a great case, too, if it wins the Big Ten and then nothing much changes in the tournament.
This is still a dangerous team, full of balance. But my question is who is this team’s best player? Isaac Haas gets the most use and, to me, that’s a big mistake.
When Purdue is throwing it into Haas, I’m relieved if I’m the opponent. But if it isn’t using him, he’s not a great defender or rebounder and he clogs the middle for the guards.
Lots of guys are going to line up to take Purdue in their Final Four, or in the bracket pool but I’m not the biggest fan, if you couldn’t tell.
Illinois Fighting Illini
It’s still doing better than Illinois, which lost for the 13th time last weekend on senior night at the Breslin Center. The Illini are only better than Rutgers in the Big Ten and will fall back into a tie for last-place if it loses this game.
Tom Izzo was complimentary of how hard Illinois played in his postgame interview after the game last weekend. Apparently, effort can only get you so far. The Illini lost by 20.
Leron Black is this team’s leading scorer and go-to guy on offense. He doesn’t shoot a ton of threes (he averages just over one attempt per game) but he makes the most of them, shooting over 53 percent this season.
He took a big leap from last season to this one and he’ll be back next year, hoping to do the same.
Illinois goes to Rutgers for its final game of the season to determine the last-place finisher in the conference.

Free Purdue vs. Illinois NCAAB Prediction: Purdue wins without Edwards.
But I just don’t see any game being easy from here until Purdue’s season eventually ends. And I’m fairly certain it will end with a loss.
