Four years removed from a National Title, Villanova shoots for its second Sweet 16 in a row on Sunday.
The Wildcats are favorites over Ohio State, which hasn’t been to the Tournament’s second weekend since 2013, when Aaron Craft was running the show.
Ohio State Buckeyes
Many didn’t expect the Buckeyes to even make it this far. Not only were they set to face what many metrics regarded as a strong 10-seed in Loyola-Chicago, they had lost four of five coming in.
Well, OSU put on a defensive clinic in a 54–41 victory.
EJ Liddell scored an efficient 16 points and Malaki Branham chipped in 14. Kyle Young played more minutes than any Buckeye and finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
Ohio State turned it over 17 times and shot 1-for-15 from three. Even Loyola shot better than that from outside.
Where the Buckeyes won big was from the free throw line. They made 17 of 21 attempts while Loyola made just three out of ten.
The Ramblers were bad but OSU’s defensive intensity is for real. To get back and defend after that many missed threes and turnovers takes athleticism and guts. Ohio State has both.
Villanova Wildcats
Villanova came out tight against Delaware, which took an early lead. It didn’t last long, though.
In the end, Villanova won by twenty, 80–60. Justin Moore led the scoring with 21. Caleb Daniels had 13 off the bench.
Last season, Villanova made it to the Sweet 16 as a 5-seed and gave Baylor its toughest game of the Tournament in a losing effort.
That was with Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, who is now in the NBA, but without Collin Gillespie, who got hurt.
With just about everyone else back and better, including Gillespie, this ‘Nova team is built for a long run.
Like seemingly all Villanova teams, it has experience and great guard play. Jermaine Samuels, a forward, is a fifth-year who played in 25 games during the NCAA Title run of four years ago.
