Northwestern Wildcats
Northwestern looks overmatched in the Big Ten with just one win in nine conference games.
It isn’t, however, that overmatched. The worst loss came almost two months ago now, at Purdue, by fourteen.

It is 1–6 since the start of the new year but three of those losses have been by single-digits and the other three have been by eleven, twelve and thirteen points. So the Wildcats haven’t been getting completely left in the dust by the strongest conference in college basketball.
Regardless, it’s a struggle and this game will almost surely be Northwestern’s fifth loss in a row. The ‘Cats came close against MSU in Evanston back before Christmas but fell short, 77–72.
Both teams shot nine-of-twenty-one from three but the Wildcats won the turnover battle, sixteen to eight. That isn’t likely to happen at the Breslin Center, especially with the Spartans off a confidence-building victory over the weekend.
Michigan State Spartans
Michigan State earned an impressive road on Sunday, handing Minnesota just its second defeat at Williams Arena and by eighteen points.
It buoyed the Spartans in the Top 25 before the new AP Poll came out on Monday but wasn’t enough to avoid a small dip, from eleven to fourteen.
Don’t be fooled. There aren’t thirteen teams better across the country. That said, Sparty hasn’t quite been the world-beater the consensus opinion thought it would be.
Cassius Winston’s leadership outweighs any on-court deficiencies and he gives the Spartans confidence in critical moments of tight games but his shooting percentages are way down this season.
A .363 mark from three-point range is the worst in his four-year Michigan State career. His assists are down; his turnovers are up; and it leads one to wonder why.
Perhaps his supporting cast just isn’t as good as it was believed to be. Gabe Brown and Aaron Henry both looked like future stars last season when the more veteran Spartans didn’t necessarily depend on them.
This season, they have taken a small step forward but both are shooting slightly worse from outside than they did a year ago. Henry came off the bench for the first time all season in the game at Minnesota.
And after Brown, Henry and, of course, Xavier Tillman, who is averaging a double-double with three assists, two blocks and a steal per game, the Spartans are young and unproven.
The next two guys in the rotation are freshman, Rocket Watts and Malik Hall. Hall has been efficient in scoring just four points per game; Watts hasn’t in scoring over seven.
Foster Loyer hasn’t played double-digit minutes in six straight games but he’s a guy who could step in and help the Spartans win a big game in March. A top 100 recruit a year ago, he’s a smart player who can knock down a three-point shot.
He’s shooting .483 from out there this season and if the other Spartans keep struggling to knock it down, it will only be a matter of time until Loyer gets an opportunity.
