All in all, it was not the year that Northern Illinois was looking for. Not that they had crazy high expectations, but I do feel they could have played better than they did this season.
The Panthers lost to the Loyola Ramblers on Saturday by a score of 66-43. I do not think that result really surprised all that many folks.
The only way this team would have been able to punch their ticket into the madness would have been if they were able to win the Missouri Valley Tournament, which clearly did not happen.
In their last loss, I did not feel their offense showed up at all, really. It is hard to win basketball games when you score just over 40 points.
Saint Louis Billikens
Saint Louis showed glimpses of being a solid team throughout the season, but that did not seem to matter to the committee. I just feel when they looked at their body of work, there were not enough quality and impressive wins on there.
The Billikens come into this ball game with a record of 23-11. Even though that mark is not bad, it still put them in 5th place at the end of the regular season in what was a very competitive A10 conference.
This team lost to the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday by a score of 84-69. In that case, the better team was just too much for them to handle.
In the loss to Davidson, it was really a bad first half that put these guys in a hole, as they trailed by a 44-24 margin. They were much better in half number two, but that was not nearly enough to make up for the early deficit.
