I would say that it ended up being a decent season for Nicholls State, but it still is not what they wanted. No matter how you try and spin it, playing in the NIT is really not what any teams wants.
The Colonels got beat by the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Friday by a score of 71-64. It was a winnable game for them, but they just were not able to execute when it mattered most.
Although their record turned out to a solid one, it is important to remember the teams they beat. Based on that, they knew it was going to be very challenging to get an at large bid, which is why their best bet was to win the Southland Conference, which they were unable to do.
These guys did play better in the second half in their last loss, but it still was not enough what was a rough first half.
SMU Mustangs
Although they will not be participating in March Madness, I still feel it was a good year for SMU and it is certainly something they can build on for next season.
Between the regular season and the AAC tournament, the Mustangs ended up going 23-8. It was definitely a real possibility that they could have won their conference, but ultimately the best team took it home.
This group lost to the Memphis Tigers on Saturday by a score of 70-63. They knew that game was going to be a big challenge and they just did not have a lot of answers for what is a very talented and well-coached ball club.
Marcus Weathers was the leading scorer for these guys in their last game with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Also, both Kendric Davis and Michael Weathers had 12 points in the ball game.
