This Mountain West matchup features the Nevada Wolfpack and the Wyoming Cowboys.
These two teams met last in January of 2018. This game was won in overtime by the Wyoming Cowboys. The score to this game was 104-103.
Since their blowout loss to New Mexico in early January the Wolfpack have won nine games in a row. They are not only winning games, but they are more often than not blowing out their opponents. During the nine game winning streak, the Wolfpack have won by an average margin of 20.8 points. They will look to continue winning to prove to the rest of the country they are a legitimate title contender.
When discussing the Wolfpack offense, it is basically a requirement to mention the work of the Martin brothers. Caleb Martin leads the team in points (19.3), steals (1.3) and blocks (.9) per game. His brother, Cody, leads the team in assists (5.4) and field goal percentage (51.8%). This has helped the Wolfpack offense average 82.5 points per game, making them the 21st best scoring offense in the country.
Not only do the Wolfpack have a high scoring offense, but they also have a shutdown defense. They are only allowing 66.6 points per game, which is vital if they are going to win the Mountain West and make a deep run in the NCAA tournament. They also allow just 40.4% from the field to their opponents which is a formula for a winning team. Considering how bad Wyoming is, the Wolfpack should have a field day on the defensive side of the ball.
The Cowboys have been very bad this season and are only posting a conference record of 2-9. They are second to last in the Mountain West an unless they somehow win the conference tournament, they will not be earning a spot in the tournament. This game is more about defending their home court and showing improvement as the season draws closer to an end.
The Cowboys offense has been very poor, as they only average 66 points per game. Justin James is literally the only bright spot for this team and he leads the Cowboys in points (20.9), assists (4.4), rebounds (8.4), field goal percentage (40%), steals (1.6), and blocks (.6). If the Cowboys are going to pull off this monster upset, they will need James to have one of his best games ever, but will also need someone else to step up and provide scoring.
The main problem with the Cowboys defense is they cannot consistently stop anyone. They allow 75 points per game an allow 45% from the field. With how good the Wolfpack are, the Cowboys will have to slow down both Martin brothers considerably if they are going to pull off this huge upset.
