NC State Wolfpack
NC State made an excellent head coaching higher more than two years ago now in Kevin Keatts, a man of discipline and integrity who grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia and played his ball at nearby Ferrum College.
He won a National Championship at Louisville in 2013 and spent three incredibly successful seasons as the Head Coach at UNC-Wilmington.
In his first two seasons, Keatts became the Colonial Athletic’s first Head Coach to win back-to-back Coach of the Year awards. In his final two seasons, he took the Seahawks to the NCAA Tournament.
CJ Bryce started sixty-four games as a freshman and sophomore on those teams and he sat out Keatts’ first season at NC State after transferring.
This year, he’s the Wolfpack’s leading scorer at over fifteen points per game on excellent efficiency numbers.
Markell Johnson, who averaged over seven assists a game as a sophomore in Keatt’s first season in Raleigh, has really struggled to shoot the ball as a senior — NC State’s other senior (apologies to Pat Andree who plays over sixteen minutes per game as the last guy in the rotation) — this season. At least his assists are back up. He only averaged four as a junior but he’s back up to six this season.
It won’t mean nearly as much if he doesn’t break thirty percent on his three-pointers (he was over forty as a sophomore and as a junior). He’s down around twenty-seven percent this season but he’s eight of his last twenty, which is good for forty percent.
Sophomore and tied with Johnson as second leading scorer, Jericole Hellems, hasn’t practiced all week and is listed as “game-time” after suffering a concussion.
Wes Miller is a worth opponent as the Head Coach on the other side. His team ran into Wofford last season but the Terriers have lost their head coach and some senior starpower since then.
UNCG graduated its leading scorer Francis Alonso but retained most everybody else eligible, with the exception of power forward Eric Hamilton, who transferred for the second time in his career to Pitt, where he didn’t have to sit out a season and is averaging seventeen minutes as a senior this year.
The Spartans have non-conference wins at Georgetown and Radford with three more chances at quality wins coming, starting with this one: NC State, @Vermont, NKU.

- Under is 8-2 in UNCG last 10 overall.
