Minnesota Golden Gophers
Minnesota has won its last two and three out of its last four. All three wins have come at home (Penn State, Iowa, Illinois). The loss was pretty good, too, a two-point defeat at Michigan, which was an easy cover.
So don’t look now but the Golden Gophers have just five losses, though the first four were all pretty bad, or at least all by double-digits. They lost at BC, at Ohio State, vs. Maryland and then at Illinois.
Two freshman and a senior each average nearly exactly 10 points per game (actually, they’re all slightly over 10 ppg) but the real scoring punch comes from the duo of junior Amir Coffey and senior Jordan Murphy.
They combine to score 31 points per game, on average, but do not chuck it well from three. Murphy averages less than an attempt per game so it isn’t terrible that he shoots under 27 percent. Coffey, though, takes over three bombs per game and is short of 30 percent.
It’s tough to go far in today’s game with the 292nd-best three-point percentage in the country, which is the challenge Minnesota faces going forward this season.
Purdue is rolling with six straight wins, a streak that began at the Kohl Center, where the Boilermakers beat the Badgers by four points.
Then Purdue blew out Rutgers, blew out Indiana, won at Ohio State, won vs. Michigan State and, most recently, won at Penn State.
Trevion Williams entered the starting lineup for the Wisconsin game and hasn’t left it since, playing about 20-25 minutes a night since. The 6’9″ forward has posted a couple double-doubles and is scoring efficiently in addition to playing stellar defense.
He’s brought some better balance to a lineup that still features excellent guard play, as has been the norm in Matt Painter’s tenure.
Carsen Edwards and Ryan Cline shoot well over 40 percent on their 18 three-point attempts per game, as a duo. As a team, 40.6 percent is good enough for second in the country.
