The first of three games in San Antonio this week matches the rejuvenated Michigan Wolverines against the Wildcats of Villanova.
The winner advances to the chance to play for a spot in the Final Four against either Arizona or Houston.
Michigan Wolverines
Michigan played the very first game of the Round of 64 on Thursday in Indianapolis and it got off to a rough start.
Not only was it without its starting point guard DeVante Jones, Colorado State came out raining three-pointers.
But Michigan wore the Rams down and got Jones back in its 76–68 win over Tennessee in the championship game in Indy.
Jones started but only played 11 minutes and wasn’t much of a factor. Hunter Dickinson, an all-Regional performer in last year’s NCAA Tournament, went 8-for-13 and finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
Eli Brooks provided the big game in support of the Dickinson, scoring 23 on 9-of-14 shooting, adding in five assists.
With four full days to get fit again, Jones should be better in this one and he will have to be, given Villanova’s depth of guards.
Villanova Wildcats
With a 71–61 win over Ohio State on Sunday, Villanova got back to the Sweet 16, which is were it bowed out to Baylor last year.
This is a rematch of the 2018 National Championship Game, which was played between these two schools in the same arena.
Villanova won going away. Eli Brooks played three minutes for Michigan. Collin Gillespie played 17 for ‘Nova and Jermaine Samuels was on the bench. Of course, Jay Wright was coaching Villanova.
Other than that, all the players and Michigan’s coach are different people this time around.
A model of consistency, Villanova has been either the Big East Regular Season or Conference Tournament Champion for nine straight years now.
Like Michigan, ‘Nova started the season in the top-10 of the national rankings but while the Wolverines fell out and never recovered, the Wildcats finished strong to finish in sixth.
If a poll were to be released this week, Villanova would jump Baylor and Tennessee.
