Michigan has had a great start to the Juwan Howard tenure, but they may be in for a dog fight vs. upstart Illinois Wednesday night in Champaign.
The Fighting Illini narrowly missed out on upsetting Maryland last game and feature a very talented roster with a couple NBA-ready players.
UM has stormed up the rankings as of late, thanks largely in part to a very impressive showing at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.
During that tournament, the Wolverines knocked off North Carolina by 9 and Gonzaga by 18 points. Eli Brooks went off for 24 to lead the win over UNC while Isaiah Livers had 21 vs. Gonzaga.
The Wolverines did come back to Earth a bit in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge, losing to top ranked Louisville 58-43. UM shot an atrocious 15-58 (26%) vs. the Cardinals.
It was looking like 1st year coach Juwan Howard’s fast paced offense was solved with just 43 points vs. Louisville. That notion was quickly dispelled in the conference opener as Michigan upended Iowa 103-91.
The Wolverines showed great depth in the win over Iowa as six players scored at least 12 points. Michigan is the #13 ranked shooting squad in the country at 50.2%.
Illinois Fighting Illini
Illinois fell a point shy in their bid to upset Maryland to kick off conference play as the Terrapins ultimately pulled out a 59-58 win. It was still an impressive showing for the Illini though, on the road as +9.5 point underdogs.
It was definitely a lower scoring game for this Illini team that ranks #11 in the nation with nearly 84 points per game. Illinois has posted back-to-back 117+ point scoring games in the last two weeks, albeit vs. poor competition.
While the Illini COULD keep this one close, they were also upset at home by Miami in the ACC / Big 10 Challenge as –9.5 favorites. Illinois was down 50-31 at half time before crawling back to the 79-81 defeat.
The reason Illinois’ scoring was down a bit on Saturday was due to their duo of Ayo Dosunmo and Kofi Cockburn combining for just 9 points each. They both had gone for 20+ in 2 of 3 games prior.
The Illini are hungry for a win after dropping 4 straight in this series, all by at least 9 points. This will be Howard’s first conference road game coaching though, does that give Illinois the edge in Champaign?
CBB Betting Trends:
- Wolverines are 5-1 ATS last 6 overall
- Wolverines are 4-1 ATS last 5 as a favorite
- Fighting Illini are 3-9 ATS last 12 Wednesday games
- Home team is 3-1-1 ATS last 5 meetings
