The Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Cavaliers will be facing each other on two of the next 3 Saturdays as they meet for the first of their two meetings this afternoon in Charlottesville. The two will meet again on Miami’s home floor on the 19th and the race for the top seed of the ACC Tournament is a wild one!
There are 7 teams within 2.5 games of each other that are all hoping to land the top position in the ACC standings and these two programs are right in the thick of it.
The Hurricanes are tied at 8 – 3 with Notre Dame right on the heels of the Duke Blue Devils who are 8 – 2 in conference play currently holding the pole position. Miami holds the tie-breaker with Duke having won their only meeting of the season against the Blue Devils, 76 – 74.
The Cavaliers have been alternating wins and losses over the last 9 games and despite being in the 6th position of the standings and only 8 – 4 at home, the line setters seem to want to convince people that Virginia is the better team. Maybe home-court advantage could be a supporting factor but the Hurricanes have been an outstanding road team all season long.
Miami Hurricanes
The Canes have only tasted a defeat once from their 6 true road games this season, so they have proven that no building puts fear in this program. Miami has found wins at Duke and Virginia Tech which are both tough places for road teams to escape with wins.
Miami is coming off a home loss against Notre Dame as 5-point favorites, 78 – 74, this after being winners of 3 of their previous 4 games headed into the affair with the Irish.
Kameron McGusty had his average drop to 17.5 PPG after the 7-point effort in the loss to Notre Dame, and opposing coaches are starting to try to slow him down as best they can. When McGusty is feeling hot he has that ability to take over a game and if you let him do it you will pay the price. The only other time this entire season that KcGusty was held under double-digits was against Dayton otherwise he has found his way to 10+ like clockwork.
The senior guard had gone 16 straight outings with a double-digit effort so he will likely want to get his groove on tonight to not let it happen again. Virginia better be well aware of where he is on the court tonight, although Isaiah Wong is no cup of tea to deal with either. Wong led the way with 18 points in the loss to the Irish bringing his season average just above 16 PPG.
Depth is still a major concern for this team and rebounding issues are squarely facing Miami this season. Virginia will not be letting the Canes have too many second chances so the shooting better be precise tonight.
Virginia Cavaliers
One thing the Cavs can do well is rebound the rock and defend the pill even though this is nothing like it was a few years ago. We all remember the totals at 102 that we were constantly seeing from Virginia in 2019-20 but this is not that team anymore.
Virginia has had some issues defending the 3-point line and shooting issues are also still an issue around Charlottesville. The Cavs offense is ranked 331st only putting up 62.9 PPG so they put a lot of pressure on that defense because of it. In all actuality, this team doesn’t exactly come up with any offensive rebounds either as they just expect to get their shot off and get back on defense. We don’t see this Cavs team getting a lot of second-chance points this season.
We saw this defense do it again last time out against Boston College as they held the Eagles to 55 points and only 25 in the first half. Kihei Clark led the way with 19 points and it brought his average up to 9.8 PPG for the season. Another effort like that could make him the third Cavs player to be averaging double-digits for the year.
Jayden Gardner is averaging 14.5 PPG to lead this team and also manages to bring in about 7 boards a night as well. However, Reece Beekman!! Hello, REECE BEEKMAN are you listening? We’re going to need a little better of an effort from ya, dude! Beekman scored as many points as I did against B.C and this team cannot really afford to have a starter go that cold. Remember now, you get the starting 5 and a dose of Stattmannn and Shedrick every night and that’s it! We know that the Cavs will have 2 subs ready to relieve anyone who is having a tough game or who may end up in foul trouble.

If the line setters want to leave some points on the board for me then I will vote yes! Canes and that road record have my favoritism even if the oddsmakers see it the other way. That bothers me none!
