LSU Tigers
LSU lost both Tremont Waters and Naz Reid from last season’s Sweet Sixteen team but the Tigers have managed an 11–4 start in Head Coach Will Wade’s third season and are undefeated in SEC play.
A big reason why is the continued development of senior guard Skylar Mays, who arrived on campus four years ago as an unranked recruit.
He started twenty-five games as a freshman and scored over eight points per game with 3.6 assists. He continued to start as a sophomore and junior and saw increased scoring outputs but didn’t get any more efficient.

That has changed in his senior season. Mays’ scoring has continued to increase (from 11.3 ppg as a sophomore to 13.4 as a junior to now 15.8 as a senior) and on top of that, he’s shooting over fifty percent from the field after three seasons in the low forties.
He wasn’t much of a three-point shooter before this season and only made thirty-one percent of his five attempts per game as a junior. This season, he’s shooting thirty-nine percent.
His assist numbers are back up a bit after dipping in his sophomore and junior seasons, too. And he’s getting more rebounds than ever before.
LSU’s other four double-digit scorers are all either sophomores or freshmen.
The Tigers will be on the road a lot this week with this trip to College Station followed by a game at Mississippi over the weekend. They won at Tennessee in their SEC opener, their only conference road game played thus far.
Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M stuck with Head Coach Billy Kennedy for eight years before running out of patience following a 14–18 season a year ago.
It went out and got Buzz Williams, who had a successful five-year tenure at Virginia Tech that ended with four twenty-win seasons in a row and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
Williams didn’t play college basketball. He started as a student assistant at Navarro Junior College and then at Oklahoma City, where he earned two degrees.
He’s from the state of Texas, however, and coached under Billy Gillespie at A&M from 2004 to 2006. That led to his first head coaching job at New Orleans before becoming a top assistant at Marquette and, eventually, its head coach.
He made the NCAA Tournament five successive seasons at Marquette and reached the Sweet Sixteen three straight years (including one Elite Eight appearance).
He’s off to a 2–1 start in conference play with wins against Mississippi and at Vanderbilt and the only loss coming at Arkansas.
