The Kentucky Wildcats were not going to let injuries be an excuse for a loss to Alabama last time out. With starting guards TyTy Washington Jr. and Sahvir Wheeler unable to have an influence on the outcome of the game, the Cats mounted a big come back and swept the season series with the Tide. The 90 – 81 win along with an Auburn loss to Florida this week has the Cats hoping to land in the top-5 of the Monday morning rankings.
In addition, we all know the top spot in the SEC tourney is still up for grabs and Kentucky certainly wants that achievement under their belts. WInning a regular-season title is always big when you wear blue and white because it just adds to their history of accomplishments… Oh, and the 1-seed in the SEC tourney doesn’t hurt either.
In the meantime, LSU is in quite a battle for the team that lands the 5-seed in the SEC end-of-season party. There are five 7 – 7 programs vying for the 5 – 9 positions in the SEC standings and right now LSU holds all of the tie-breakers for that spot. As long as they win out they will be the 5-seed in the tourney. Oh, they have to win on the road tonight against Kentucky as part of that so buckle up, kids!
LSU Tigers
LSU knows they are the underdogs tonight at Rupp Arena and no one really even needs to tell them that to get them motivated. With the SEC tournament around the corner, the Tigers certainly want to stay higher up in the standings and not go in the wrong direction down the home stretch of the regular season.
The Tigers will have Missouri, Arkansas, and Alabama left to play before the SEC tourney, and they have already lost the first two meetings with the Tide and the Hogs. the meeting with Mizzou will be the first and only between them but the Tigers did take the first meeting with Kentucky, 65 – 60.
January 4 seems like a long time ago as SEC play was just getting underway and LSU jumped out to a 3 – 1 start with a win over Tennesee as well. A lot has changed for the Tigers since then and this is just not the same looking team that had so much success early in the season. The 9 – 1 start in non-conference play helped keep a positive mindset for this team but the SEC schedule has been tough to navigate.
LSU is 5 – 6 on the road going to a place where the Wildcats have not tasted anything like a defeat this season and the line setters are pointing to a Cats win. Tari Eason is going to have to get that average up to 17 PPG with a 19-point effort tonight. He and Darius Days are both bringing in 7 rebounds a night cleaning up the glass.
Kentucky Wildcats
As everyone keeps an eye out on the status of Tyty Washington’s ankle and Sahvir Wheeler’s wrist, the two appear to be in line to miss this game after sitting out the Tide affair. The pair of Cats are certainly an integral part of how the Cats purr but as we all know it just creates opportunities for other players to step up and shine.
Kentucky got down by a baker’s dozen early in the first half and it looked like it might be a long day for the Wildcats against the Tide. Alabama came out strong and it was 47 – 46 Kentucky going to the locker room but it wasn’t just another 1-point lead. Kentucky was down 46 – 34 and you see the halftime score I just mentioned right?
The Cats scored the last 13 points of the first stanza and Kellen Grady had himself a career effort in the 90 – 81 win. Alabama came out of the second-half gate strong again and then you could just see the momentum swing.
Kellen Grady sparked a 20 – 2 run that had Rupp Arena about as loud as we have heard that place in 3 years. Seriously, the decibel level lifted with every shot Grady took and it lit him into another stratosphere. Grady ended the game with 25 points while splashing seven 3-pointers and teammate Keion Brooks tore the entire roof off the building just as the announcer called the 1-minute to play signal.
With 57 seconds left to play, Brooks went up for a board and came down with the rim and the entire fucking building registered a 7.5 on the Richter scale. Those two of his 18 points on the night pretty much put the loss to Tennesee right in the rear-view mirror.
