The NIT Tip-Off is just a mini four-team, two-day tournament with no room for mediocrity. The field consists of Louisville, Tennessee, Marquette and Kansas. This is the first of two semifinals on Wednesday evening at the Barclays Center.
The Cardinals have won each of their first three games, the first two in landslides and the third one by eight over a good Vermont team.
Jordan Nwora, a 6’8″ sophomore from Canisius, leads the team in scoring and he comes off the bench as the sixth man. He scored twenty-two against the Catamounts.
Stephen Enoch starts at center at 6’10 but he can shoot it from anywhere on the floor. He’s off to a fine start with fourteen points per game on nearly seventy-seven percent shooting. One of those shots was a three-pointer.
Rick Barnes enters his fourth season as the UT Head Coach and is coming off his first NCAA Tournament appearance with the Vols. UT lost in the Round of 32 a year ago after a season of exceeding expectations.
At least the two best players from that team, Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield, are back this season for their junior and seniors seasons, respectively.
Williams is averaging over twenty-two points per game in the first three games of Tennessee’s season. Schofield is one of three guys to average between twelve and fifteen points but he’s getting nearly eight rebounds and five assists per game along side it, in addition to his always stellar defense.
Two more upperclassmen average double-figures. On paper and in the early going, UT appears to be a complete team on paper. Barnes doesn’t play anybody over 6’9″, however. We’ll see if size is a problem as the season wears on.
