Kansas State Wildcats
Kansas State was a missed running layup away from taking Arizona State to overtime back in its fifth game of the season. It was an example of how conference, schedule, and a little fortune one way or another can totally sway peoples’ opinions of who the best teams in the country actually are.
K-State and Arizona State looked like just about the same team, two teams that get up and down, can jump and have some perimeter scoring. Arizona State won by two, went on to win a couple more big games and will almost surely finish the season on top of, or near the top of their conference, while Kansas State will be a middling team in the Big-12.
In March, we’ll likely be talking about the Sun Devils as a two or three seed. Kansas State will be fortunate to get in the field. Yet, put them on the same court together and it will be a game that could go either way.
The Wildcats have three guys who average between 14.2 and 14.9 points per game and a fourth who gets 12. They shoot well from all over the field, including 36 percent from three.
But they need some quality wins in the Big-12 to be considered in March. And if they do get in, it will likely be as an eight, a nine or a ten. Considering there might only be 25 teams or so that are actually better than Kansas State, it might be a team worth keeping an eye on for your March Madness pools.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Texas Tech looks like a team that is about building a resume, not to get into the Tournament, but to get a seed that will line it up for a Sweet Sixteen berth.
The Red Raiders have four wins over ranked opponents: Northwester, Nevada, Baylor and Kansas. The last two were the first two conference games and the last win (Kansas) was on the road.
It’s been a while since Texas Tech has been on such a high national level. It’s currently ranked #6 at KenPom with a dominant defense and an offense that shoots 49 percent from the field and better than 36 percent from three.
A win at Kansas isn’t as rare this season as it’s been in the last ten, or so, but it also can’t be discounted. The fact that Tech came in as a ranked opponent that the Jayhawks couldn’t have slept on and won with such a performance leads me to believe this team is for real. If it is, this is a game it will take care of.
