Iowa Hawkeyes
Freshman guard CJ Fredrick, who is averaging over ten points per game this season for the Hawkeyes, third-best on the team, hasn’t played since injuring his foot against Penn State on Jan. 4.
Iowa lost that game and the next one at Nebraska but it bounced back to earn an eighteen-point win against Maryland over the weekend.

Luke Garza and Joe Wieskamp, the two guys on Iowa’s roster who score more on average than Fredrick, combined for forty-seven points in the victory. Maryland’s forty-nine points were the lowest a team has scored against Iowa this season.
Iowa has eleven wins this season and they have all come by at least seven points; ten of them have come by double-digits.
If Fredrick is out again (and it looks likely, as he’s still in a walking boot), the inside-out duo of Garza and Wieskamp will be asked to carry the scoring load again.
Garza stands 6’11” and averages twenty-two and eleven. He attempts 2.5 threes per game but does most all of his damage inside, where he shoots fifty-nine percent.
Wiescamp, meanwhile, shoots nearly forty percent on almost six three-point attempts per game.
Northwestern Wildcats
But Northwestern might have the answer for Garza with the combination of Ryan Young and Pete Nance.
Both are 6’10” and both play close to thirty minutes per game for the Wildcats. It’s a rare combination in today’s game but it could serve Northwestern well against Garza and Iowa.
If the ‘Cats can slow Garza with multiple bodies, they won’t have to double as much and won’t leave Iowa’s eager shooters open on the perimeter. The only concern is whether Young, a freshman, and/or Nance, a sophomore, are up for the challenge.
Back in early December, Northwestern lost by fourteen at Purdue. Since then, it has won just once in four conference games but it has been in every game: a five-point loss to Michigan State, a nine-point loss at Minnesota and a four-point loss at Indiana. It got its first Big Ten victory on Saturday, at home, against Nebraska.
It’s a young team. Head Coach Chris Collins admitted as much after Northwestern lost its season-opener against Merrimack College in Evanston and then did it again after it bounced back to beat Providence the very next time out.
So the inconsistencies aren’t surprising. In addition to Providence, NW beat Bradley and Boston College. It will be outmatched most nights in the Big Ten, however. Collins’ most difficult job will be making sure his team not only improves but feels like its improving, even in conference losses, which will pile up either way.

Free Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Northwestern Wildcats NCAAB Prediction: Iowa by a few.
Northwestern is a live dog at home but can’t be favored in this spot. The ‘Cats give Iowa all it can handle but fall just short.
