Iowa blew out Minnesota on Monday, 72–52, to get its first Big Ten win of the season after losing the opener to Michigan.
The Hawkeyes won the turnover battle, fourteen to eight, and got forty-four points from the combination of Joe Wieskamp and Luke Garza. The Hawkeyes shot ten of twenty-one from three.
Seniors don’t play a big role on this team. Only two play in the short rotation, including Jordan Bohanan, who peaked early in his Iowa career.
A member of the Big Ten all-freshman team four years ago, Bohanan is averaging just eight points per game so far this season after three consecutive years in double-figures. He entered this season with a three-point percentage over forty-one percent but he’s down in the low thirties so far.
Iowa State Cyclones
Iowa State also lost to Michigan but in a different sort of game Iowa did, 83–76. Another one of its three losses was to Seton Hall in Atlantis.
The Cyclones avenged that loss to the Hall on Sunday by beating the Pirates at home, 76–66. Three guys on ISU scored a team-high seventeen points and the ‘Clones held Seton Hall’s great scorer, Myles Powell, to seven of twenty from the field.
Like Iowa, seniors don’t play a big role for Steve Prohm and Iowa State. The three leading scorers are sophomores and just two seniors play in the regular rotation.
Tyrese Haliburton started thirty-four games as a freshman a year ago but only averaged about five shot attempts per game. This season, the keys to the offense are his. He’s getting up a dozen shots a game and leads the team with sixteen points per game.

The home team has the advantage in this matchup but Iowa has the talent and the difference-maker, which is Garza in the middle. Few teams have an answer for him.
