Indiana Hoosiers

Indiana has certainly hit their stride on the season, winning 8 of their last 9 games, including a home win over then #1 Purdue.

They’ve been home warriors this season, posting a 13-1 record, but suffering in road contests, hovering just below the .500 mark at 4-5.

KenPom is bullish on the Hoosiers, calling them a top-20 team in college basketball, including a top-25 offense. Indiana is a bit of a throwback offense, running through their center and eschewing the 3-point shot.

Per teamrankings.com, the Hoosiers score 24.2% of their points from 3 (334th). Can they dominate the paint against the Wildcats?

Hoosiers Stars

The straw that stirs the drink for Indiana is center Trayce Jackson-Davis. The 4th-year true senior is averaging a double-double, including 20.2 ppg, but has a scoring highmark of 35 points on the season. How does Northwestern deal with him?

Outside of TJD, the Hoosiers have Jalen Hood-Schofino, who not only helps them become the acronym gang, but kicks in 12.6 ppg himself. His deep ball has been acutely effective all season, clocking in at 39%. The classic way to describe JHS is that he’s the X-factor.

While TJD is the consistent scorer, JHS has the ability to kick the Indiana offense up a notch, so he’s the crux of whether they cover or not.

Northwestern Wildcats

The Wildcats are a surprise team this season, sitting just behind Purdue, tied with Indiana for second place in the conference. They’ve gotten to 18 wins in large part, due to their defense.

Northwestern is 20th in the country in opponent scoring, giving up just 61.9 ppg.

The offense severely lacks though. KenPom ranks the Wildcat offense an unsexy 97th, which calls into question how many points are scored in this contest and makes the under the leading thought at this point.

Boo Buie and Chase Audige are the leading scorers and carried the offense against Purdue, accounting for 64% of the Wildcat points.

We know Indiana will want to score in the paint, or at minimum we know they won’t rely on the long ball here.

Per teamrankings.com, Northwestern is allowing 44.3% of opponent points from 2-pointers, good for 22nd in the country. They’ve been far more abused by the 3 point ball, which we know Indiana isn’t likely to capitalize on.

Northwestern has hit the under at a 60% clip this season from their elite defense and we know Indiana is a low-volume deep ball team.

We’ve built the right case here for an under. An elite defense goes against a team that scores the majority of their points from 2. The 3-pointer has been the great equalizer in recent years but I don’t expect it to be a huge factor here.

I’m expecting a Virginia-esque slowdown here with Indiana ultimately pulling out the win. The only reason I’m not taking a side here is Northwestern’s recent win over Purdue, where they limited the #1 team to 58 points.
