As the fifth-seed in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Illinois State Redbirds have been able to erect themselves from a terrible stretch of play earlier in the season to win two straight games. In their last outing, despite shooting just 40% from the floor, they were able to take care of the Missouri State Bears thanks to their defense neutralizing their inconsistent offense from start to finish.
The Salukis of Southern Illinois is one slot behind the Redbirds in the sixth-seed. They have also been on the winning track lately as they are winners of six of their last nine outings, overall.
Southern Illinois Salukis
What makes this game interesting is that both teams stand at 9-8 within the MVC. Unfortunately, the Redbirds suffered the one-point loss in their last outing versus the Salukis as the Redbirds were up by eight points at the half only to be outscored in the second while enduring the slim defeat.
Leading scorer Kavion Pippen (13 ppg) had a rough night in shooting 2-7 from the floor while ending with 6 points while Aaron Cook (11 ppg) also struggled with six points on the night in going 2-3 from the perimeter. However, Armon Fletcher (17 ppg) kept the team in the game in scoring 17 points while pulling down 9 rebounds as the Redbirds were able to win round one.

Since their victory, the Salukis have been up and down as they have recently begun to erect themselves from a rough patch of play. Nonetheless, their defense has seemingly righted itself in their last two outings in allowing just 59 points per outing to opponents.
And while the defense allows 42% shooting per game, they allowed the Purple Aces to shoot at a 50% clip for the night as they also connected on 13 three’s. However, they allowed the Redbirds just 38% shooting on the night, as stated, in their last outing, including 9 or 24 shooting from three-point range for the game.
Illinois State Redbirds
Much the same has been the case for the Redbirds of Illinois State as their offense has only surpassed the 70 point mark in just one of their nine games, overall. This would not change in their last outing versus the Missouri State Bears as they shot a dismal 40% from the floor whileits defense held the struggling Bears to just 38% on the night.
Malik Yarborough along with Phil Fayne led the team with 28 along with 18 points, respectively, as they also combined for 16 rebounds. Also, Yarborough (17 ppg, 7 rebs) went 11-11 from the free throw line as he has scored 20+ points in three of the last four outings for the Redbirds.

The 6’9″ forward in Fayne (16 ppg, 6 rebs) has also stepped up his game as well lately as he continues to shoot over 50% from the floor on a nightly basis. On the other hand, despite these playmakers, the Redbirds are averaging just 68 points per game on a lousy 42% shooting.
The defense allows 42% shooting per game, yet they have played much better lately as opponents have not reached the 70 point mark in three of their last four games. They will certainly need the defense in this matchup if they are able to keep the game close while possibly pulling out a victory on Saturday.

Free llinois State Redbirds vs. Southern Illinois Salukis NCAAB Prediction:
Look for this to be an offensive struggle throughout as you have two defenses that have had to pull the load all season due to a lack of consistent offense. And while it may be difficult to decide who will take the victory, it will be easy to see that the under will be the strong play in the end as I see the total ending at/around the 120 mark in the end.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Under
Again, the under has been the play in four of the last five games for the Salukis. On the other hand, it has also been the result in four straight games for the Redbirds. Again, one should expect a highly competitive, yet, low-scoring affair amongst these two offensively-challenged squads.
