Illinois Fighting Illini
At 8–2, Illinois is tied with Michigan State for first place in the Big Ten, which many consider to be the best and deepest conference in college basketball.

The Illini have played a lot of close games. Their first conference game of the season, way back in the first week of December, finished a one-point defeat at Maryland. Since, they have been on the right side of every close game.
There was the one-point win at Wisconsin, the two-point win at Michigan, the three-point win vs Rutgers and the four-point win vs Northwestern. The eight-point win vs Minnesota on Thursday was stress-free, by comparison.
But Illinois has blown out Purdue twice (by twenty-six at home and seventeen on the road) and beat Michigan by nine when it hosted the first of two matchups.
It hasn’t yet played Penn State, nor Ohio State, nor Iowa. This will be the first of two matchups against the Hawkeyes.
Iowa Hawkeyes
It’s a pleasure that we’ll get at least two games between these two teams because they matchup well with their two true centers going at it.
Illinois has the seven-foot freshman Kofi Cockburn, who was born in Jamaica and attended Oak Hill in California. He’s just about averaging a double-double with 1.4 blocks per game, too.
Iowa’s Luke Garza will give up an inch and about forty-five pounds. Garza does average a double-double with twenty-three points per game, to boot. And, unlike Cockburn, he has range out to the three-point arc.
Cockburn is a special physical specimen who could make life tough on Garza if he’s crashing the boards hard and making him play defense. Iowa’s offense runs through Garza and if Cockburn can slow him down, he’ll give Illinois an advantage.
But, especially in Iowa City, the guy more likely to get the best of this matchup is the junior Garza himself. He’s been giving big men headaches all season and Cockburn hasn’t seen someone of his caliber yet. If the freshman proves to slow of foot to contain Garza, Head Coach Brad Underwood will have no choice but to play smaller, quicker forwards in his place.
