Memphis and Boise State join the Sun Belt Conference Champion Georgia State and the top team in the land and West Coast Conference Champion Gonzaga Bulldogs.
The team that emerges undefeated with two wins will continue play next week in San Diego.
Georgia State Panthers
In eight seasons under Head Coach Ron Hunter, Georgia State made three NCAA Tournaments.
This will be its first under Rob Lanier, who took over for Hunter in 2019.
GSU finished third in the Sun Belt regular season standings, behind Texas State and Appalachian State.
It knocked off Appalachian State in the semifinals of the conference tournament and beat Louisiana in the final, 80–71.
Four of Lanier’s starters finished in double-figures with the fifth scoring nine. Corey Allen netted a game-high 29 points.
Allen began his collegiate career in 2016 at Detroit, where he played his first two seasons.
After transferring and then redshirting his first season at Georgia State, Allen has played 79 games at Georgia State and been named all-Sun Belt Conference twice, including being named to the third team this year.
He, Kane Williams and Justin Roberts are Georgia State’s three leading scorers and all have at least five years of experience as college student-athletes.
The trio have played a total of 397 college games.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Not even Gonzaga, which has traditionally boasted more experience than its NCAA Tournament opponents, can match that.
The Bulldogs are led by junior Drew Timme, who averaged 17.5 points per game this season and was an All-Tournament selection in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore Julian Strawther took a big step this season to average over 12 points per game, up from just three as a freshman.
Chet Holmgren is a seven-footer who shot over 41 percent from three in his freshman year. The number-one overall recruit in the class of 2021 has been named a Wooden Award Finalist.
The guy who plays more minutes than any of them is senior Andrew Nembhard, who transferred from Florida prior to last season.
He’s not the top scorer, but the 6’5″ point guard does a little bit of everything. He averaged career-highs in assists (5.7) and rebounds (3.2) per game this season while keeping his turnovers per game (1.8) under two.
