SEC action is set for Wednesday as the Georgia Bulldogs visit the Florida Gators. At 1-9 in conference play, and 0-6 on the road, Georgia hopes to knock Florida further down the NCAA Tournament bubble list. Meanwhile, the Gators look to push their 5-5 league mark above .500.
Florida opens as -15.5 favorites even though they’ve struggled to put teams away of late.
Georgia Bulldogs
The Bulldogs are just 1-11 since Dec. 21. That losing run includes several double-digit setbacks and frustrating performances.
However, on rare occasion, the stars align for Tom Crean’s hard-luck group. Alabama couldn’t escape UGA’s lone successful SEC bid on Jan. 25. Recently, No. 1-ranked Auburn almost fell to the amped up Bulldogs.
Kario Oquendo looked like the nation’s best player for stretches as he tallied 25 points, five rebounds and four steals to ignite the rally portion of UGA’s 74-72 Sat. loss vs. Auburn.
On one possession, the hyper-athletic Oquendo ripped the ball from Jabari Smith’s hands, then turned, beat everyone down the floor, and banged a highlight jam that whipped Stegman Coliseum into a frenzy.
Unfortunately for Georgia, Superman Oquendo turned back to Clark Kent after the Tigers honed in on his half court game. Still, the ‘Dawgs showed they can compete with any team on any night opposite Auburn.
Don’t expect that energy from an excitable UGA bunch on the road, though. The Bulldogs have dropped four of their last five games away from Steg by at least 15 points.
UGA averages 100.6 points per game per 100 possessions and allows 109.4. The Bulldogs shoot 44/32/74% and allow 46% return fire from the field. UGA is 200th, or worse, in almost every major statistical category. Georgia has enjoyed surprising moments this year, but those highlights can’t overshadow their shortcomings.
Florida Gators
Florida rolls into its latest SEC matchup riding a fragile three-game winning streak. The Gators needed huge second half comebacks to eke by Oklahoma State, Missouri and Ole Miss.
None of UF’s recent victories come against quality opposition. Though, each team listed is a couple of competitive notches above last-placed UGA. That decreased resistance might be enough to raise Florida from its tenuous 3-2 stretch suffered since Jan. 24.
In all honesty, the Gators require a loud win before entering a regular season-ending cauldron. Florida sits third on Joe Lunardi’s ‘next four teams out’ list. That’s unenviable territory, with Kentucky (twice) and Auburn waiting.
Using all their urgency, the Gators slowed Mississippi State down in the second half and overtime to earn their latest win, 62-57. Returning Colin Castleton looked sharp that evening while scoring 17 points.
Florida averages 104.8 points per 100 possessions and allows 94.2. The Gators have started their last three games ice cold from the field, while using second-half scoring bursts and defense to gain victories.
UF shoots 42/30/72 and adds top-25 steals and blocks per game averages.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Bulldogs are 3-1 ATS in their last 4 games.
- Over is 5-0 in Bulldogs last 5 games following an ATS win.
- Florida is 1-2 ATS in its last 3 games.
Free Georgia Bulldogs vs. Florida Gators NCAAB Summary:
Neither of these teams inspire confidence considering their recent and overall play. Georgia has won three of four ATS, yet regularly loses road games by 15+ points.
Florida has split its last four ATS, and as stated throughout this preview, has needed almost miraculous second-half surges to win its last three SU vs. middling opponents
It’s a tough call, but I’ll take the Bulldogs ATS here at +15 as a potential money-maker. Florida’s offense has looked terrible recently, and UGA is playing much better than its 6-17 record of late. Take the flier this Wednesday on Georgia.
