This SEC matchup features the Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs. Both teams suffered conference losses this past week and really need a win if they are going to make a push for a NCAA tournament bid. Also, these teams are long time rivals and want bragging rights over the other.
The last time these teams met, Georgia scored an upset over the Gators 72-69 on the road in overtime.
The Gators were bested by Mississippi State this past week by a score of 68-71. This was their second consecutive loss and they cannot afford another if they are going to make a run in the SEC.
The Gators have certainly struggled this season on the offensive side of the ball. They only score an average of 69.6 points per game, which is 280th in the country. They also only shoot 42.5% from the field, so they have really struggled to score the ball on a consistent basis. The leading scorer for the Gators is KeVaughn Allen, but he is only averaging 11.7 points per game. If no one else on this team can step up and give Allen support, they will lose their third straight SEC contest.
The Gators defense has been what has kept them in games throughout this entire season. They allow 61.8 points per game, which is 14th in the country. They also do a pretty good job at defending considering their opponents shoot only 40.7% from the field. With this kind of lock down defense, the Gators will have a good chance to pick up a much needed road win.
Georgia was looking for that one quality win this past week over Kentucky, but ended up getting blown out on their home floor. Tom Crean and this Georgia are still looking for a signature win to turn their season around and a win against rival Florida could just do that.
Georgia has overall been scoring about 75.6 points per game this season. That number has dropped to 64.8 in their four SEC games played. Against Kentucky they only scored 49, which is concerning because Florida also plays solid defense. The key for the Bulldogs is winning the battle on the boards. The Bulldogs average 41.2 rebounds per game, so if they out-rebound the Gators they will create plenty of extra chances for their offense and will end up with a win.
Normally the Bulldogs are allowing 72.9 points per game, but that number has increased to 80.3 since the start of conference play. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, Florida does not have an explosive offense, so Georgia should be able to limit them enough to keep themselves in the game.
