A battle of Ohio will take place Wednesday night when the Dayton Flyers take on the Toledo Rockets in the first round of the NIT.
Both teams were upset in the conference tournaments and tarnished any chances of making the NCAA tournament. Dayton comes in off of an upset semifinal loss to eventual A-10 champion Richmond. Toledo, the #1 seed in the MAC with a 17-3 regular season record, was upset by Akron in the MAC semifinals
The winner will advance to play the winner of Belmont/Vanderbilt.
Dayton Flyers
Dayton comes into this first round matchup with a record of 23-10 this season. The Flyers finished the season prematurely with a loss to Richmond in the semifinals. Dayton blew a 10-point lead in the game and fell to Richmond 68-64. The Flyers shot 46% from the field in the game but just 5-of-20 from 3pt range.
DaRon Holmes II and Camara lead the team in scoring with 12 and 11 points per game respectively. The duo also leads the team in rebounding, with Camara averaging nearly 7 per game and Holmes II averaging 6 per contest.

Toledo’s strength is its offense, the 39th most efficient offense in the country according to KenPom. The Rockets average the 8th most points in the country at nearly 81 points per game. They are shooting nearly 48% from the field, which is 18th in the country. In addition, the Rockets are 16th in the country in assist/turnover ratio.
Despite the teams impressive record, with just the 238th toughest schedule in the country, Toledo was left out of the 68-team field.

They are a top 100 team in efficiency offensively and defensively and finished with the 125th most difficult schedule in the country. Toledo will live and die by its offense in this game, but it is a very good offense. The Rockets are also 13-1 at home this season and will likely come in with quite a chip on their shoulder after getting overlooked for the field of 68.
A strong argument could be made that the MAC deserved multiple entrants this year and the Rockets were by far the class of the conference. While Toledo’s offense has been superb, it is hard to overlook a defense that held the opposition to 40% shooting this season.
If Toledo takes care of the ball as they usually do and gets quality shots at the rim, their offense should carry the day. Take the Rockets at home.
