Dayton will arrive in Pittsburgh undefeated in the Atlantic 10 and with the swagger of a team led by a young man playing like the best player in college basketball.
Obi Toppin was the best freshman in the A-10 a season ago and he’s taken a giant leap this year as a sophomore.
He’s averaging just about twenty points per game this season on better than sixty-two percent shooting. He’s developed a reliable three-point shot so opponents can leave him open on the perimeter. He’s quick enough with handles to get to the bucket with one dribble.
He scored twenty-four points with twelve rebounds and a season-high four blocks in Dayton’s road win over Richmond on Saturday. He’s setting the tone and the rest of the Flyers are falling into place.
The next six guys in the rotation are all upperclassmen, either juniors or seniors. The first five average eight, or more, points per game with more than one assist. Dayton’s 378 assists rank fourth in the entire country.
Two games against Rhode Island, which is just a game back of the 7–0 Flyers, remain but after this one Dayton plays six of its last ten conference games at home. A win in Pittsburgh would give it ten in a row and a perfect month of January.
Duquesne is hanging on, 5–2 in the A-10 and tied with Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth, but its two losses have come in the last week.
The Dukes were crushed at Rhode Island a week ago and lost at UMass over the weekend. A return home is welcomed but Duquesne will be an underdog, as if it were on the road.
And if it doesn’t pull the upset in this one, it hosts La Salle and then gets back on the road, at Saint Louis, at Fordham, at Dayton, at St. Bonaventure and at VCU in a stretch of eight games.
Dayton doesn’t shoot well from beyond the arc (.316) but it will have to knock down some outside shots to keep up with the high-scoring Flyers. The charge will have to be led by the sophomore guard Sincere Carry.
Carry was an all-conference freshman a season ago with Obi Toppin. His scoring and assist are down a shade this season but his three-point percentage (.382) is up. If he starts this one hot, Duquesne will get the crowd into it and have a chance to pull off an upset.
CBB Betting Trends:
- DAY are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Wed. games.
- Over is 35-17-1 in DAY last 53 road games.
- Over is 13-6-2 in DUQ last 21 home games.
