Creighton Blue Jays
Since losing a close game at Georgetown on January 15, Creighton has three straight wins: home to Providence, at DePaul, which is in a free fall that started with conference play, and, most recent, vs Xavier, 77–66.

The Blue Jays shot eleven-of-twenty-nine from three (.379), which isn’t anything special for them. Four guys finished in double-figures, led by Ty-Shon Alexander with twenty-four. Denzel Mahoney continued to be a boon off the bench with fourteen.
Marcus Zegarowski and Mitch Ballock were the other two in double-figures for the Jays but it’s Ballock this handicapper has his eye on.
He tweaked his back in CU’s last loss at Georgetown and stayed in the game to play hurt. He wasn’t right. He hasn’t taken any time off since and, though he’s putting up decent numbers, he still isn’t moving like he’s capable off when he’s 100 percent.
Creighton basically goes six deep; it plays eight but in a do-or-die situation Greg McDermott might cut it to six. So there’s pressure on Ballock not to miss time. Unfortunately, if he tries playing through an injury that can’t get better without rest, the strategy will hurt the Jays in the long-term.
Villanova Wildcats
Villanova hasn’t lost since suffering its first, and only, conference defeat back in the first week of January at Marquette.
The ‘Cats have won seven in a row, six in the conference with another one over Connecticut mixed in for old times’ sake. They beat St. John’s by twenty in Queens earlier this week.
The starters scored seventy-five of Villanova’s seventy-nine points in its pasting of the Johnnies. Saddiq Bey led the way with twenty-three and Collin Gillespie had seventeen with a career-high thirteen rebounds.
He didn’t lead the team in boards, however. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had fourteen to go with thirteen points on five-of-eight from the field; it was the freshman’s seventh double-double of the season and he’s three-tenths of a rebound per game away from averaging one.
Like Creighton, Villanova doesn’t like going deep into its bench, at least not for long. The Wildcats will use eight or nine guys but only five or six play big minutes. This will primarily be a game between the starters (and Mahoney off Creighton’s bench) and it will be played at an extremely high level.

This is going to be a terrific game tipping at noon. Villanova plays four forwards together in the starting lineup. Creighton almost always has four guards on the floor.
But ‘Nova’s forwards are perimeter-oriented and Creighton’s guards are bigger. They will match-up well. This handicapper doesn’t see either team getting much room to breathe in a game that features two terrific offenses going up against heady and engaged defenses. It should be a wonderful battle that you will want the points for.
