Creighton Blue Jays
Creighton is just 3–3 in the Big East but there are long stretches where it looks like the best team in the conference.
It has lost at Butler, vs Villanova and at Georgetown. The last two losses were particularly close and Mitch Ballock wasn’t healthy in the Georgetown game after tweaking his back.

A 6’5″ junior from Eudora, Kansas, Ballock played thirty-nine out of forty minutes in the next game — Creighton’s most recent — against Providence with seventeen points and seven rebounds. He had just one assist though.
The assist numbers are indicative of how Ballock is playing. He’s a left-hander with a smooth jump shot and a developing ability to get to the rim and both finish and dish it off. He’s an excellent passer and really just a wonderful all-around player who is arguably only Creighton’s third or even fourth best player.
He, Marcus Zegarowski and Ty-Shon Alexander all have at least a year of eligibility left after this season. Perhaps Creighton’s real window of opportunity is next year but this handicapper can’t help but wonder if this is an Elite Eight or Final Four type of team that has yet to click on all cylinders for a long period of time this season.
DePaul Blue Demons
DePaul hasn’t been in the NCAA Tournament since 2004, when it won a game as a seven-seed representing Conference USA. It has been in exactly two NCAAs since 1992.
But this season the Blue Demons are no walk-overs in the conference, despite a 1–4 record. They have narrow losses to Seton Hall and Providence, at St. John’s and at Villanova.
But they beat Butler by double-digits (more than any of the four losses) over the weekend to get in the win column and now they will host a second and a third game in a row.
DePaul has used the same starting five in all eighteen of its games and there is a drop-off from there but the starting unit is competitive with any and was good enough to beat Iowa, Texas Tech, Minnesota and Northwestern.
The road is never easy in this year’s Big East. DePaul, however, has a couple bounces coming its way this time and has to hope the record starts to even out with a great sample size.
