Connecticut Huskies – Team overview/schedule
Connecticut heads into its last game of the regular season with a four-game winning streak on the line. With a victory, they will finish the 2022-2023 campaign with a winning record on the road.
Danny Hurley’s squad has an overall record of 23-7 and a conference record of 12-7. They hold a very impressive home record of 15-2.
All in all, it has been a very strong season for this Huskies crew. After starting off the season red hot, there was an inevitable drop-off, but it never got to the point where the season got away from them.
As is the case most of the time, the Big East was an absolute gauntlet this season. Four teams finished ahead of UConn in the conference standings- – Marquette, Providence, Xavier, and Creighton.
Before this matchup at the Wells Fargo Center, the Huskies torched DePaul 88-59 on Wednesday. That was the second time this season they took down the Blue Demons by double digits.
Even with Villanova not being the same team they have been in past seasons, the Huskies know the Wildcats are never an easy opponent. Still, this really should be a game that the away teams take care of business in.
Impact Players/Stats
Adama Sanogo leads Uconn in multiple categories including points per game, total points, field goal %, and he also has played in all 30 games. It is clearly very important for a team when its best player is always out on the court.
Saongo did not waste any time in the win over DePaul, as he put up 26 points and 5 rebounds. No matter what they did, the Blue Demons just did not have any answers on the defensive side for him.
In their last victory, Alex Karaban, Andre Jackson, Tristen Newton, and Donovan Clingan all scored in double figures. There was certainly no shortage of offense for the Huskies.
To me, the only number that could have been a little better for Connecticut last time out was the number of free throw attempts. They shot the ball well from the charity strike at an 80% clip, but 10 attempts are simply not enough when they start facing better competition.
This season Uconn is scoring 79.2 points per game and is making just less than 15 free throws per game. They hold an offensive rating of 116.9 and a defensive rating of 96.0.
Villanova Wildcats – Team overview/schedule
In the first season without Jay Wright as the head coach of their program, it has certainly been a down year for Villanova that has been marked by their inconsistency.
I think the up-and-down play for the Wildcats this season is really not all that surprising. They still had enough talent to at least be competitive, but there was going to be a clear decline compared to what we had seen with them for so many years.
Similar to their opponent, the home record for Nova has been quite good(10-3). On the other hand, though, they have a 5-8 away record, which is just not going to get it done.
After losing to Providence by 13 points back on February 18th, Villanova has rattled off wins against Xavier, Creighton, and Seton Hall. Two of those victories came on the road.
The final game of the regular season is certainly going to be a challenge for this group. Uconn presents them with many issues including coaching, talent, pace, and overall style of play. It will be interesting to see what version of Villanova we get.
These two schools met back in January at the XL Center and it was the Huskies that won a 74-66 battle. It was very close in the first half and the better team eventually took over in the second half. As of now, the Cats are a short underdog at home.
Impact Players/Stats
Even though their record is not where they would like it to be, Villanova does have plenty of talented players, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
Still, that has not always translated to them scoring the most points per game. Coming into this matchup, they are scoring below 70 points per game, which makes it very hard in a conference like the Big East.
Defensively, this group has been pretty solid. There have been a handful of times where they have not scored a ton of points but have still been able to get the win because the defense really stepped up.
Against a team like UConn, that defensive production is going to have to be there given the kind of players they have on offense. If Sanogo is limited and some of the other players don’t get hot, Villanova could very well make this a close game. Of course, that will be much easier said than done.

Free Connecticut Huskies vs. Villanova Wildcats NCAAB Prediction:
Free ATS Prediction: Huskies -2
To cap off the regular season, I look for UConn to be too much for Villanova to handle in this spot.
With the number not being too high, I like the Huskies as the short favorite.
Analysis
As seen by their schedule, Villanova absolutely has the ability to compete and sometimes beat tricky conference opponents.
Still, I feel the talent and depth that the Huskies have will allow them to build a comfortable lead and not look back.
An obvious cause for concern that Nova faces is the ability to slow down Sanogo and company. I am not banking on that going too well on Saturday evening.
