The first of two semifinal games will take place in Mobile, Alabama, as the Jags play host to the Chanticleers for the right to move on to The Basketball Classic Finals. The winner of this affair will move on to face either Southern Utah or Fresno State as those two programs will meet in Fresno later this evening.
Be sure to navigate your way to the other semifinal preview as I will have you covered the rest of the way through the finals.
Coastal’s victories in this event include a 66 – 42 win over Maryland-ES along with an 84 68 win over Florida Gulf Coast to reach the semifinals. The Coastal defense has been a strength of this team all season long as they rank 8th in the entire country holding opponents to a 38.4 shooting percentage,
The Jags’ two victories have come against SE Louisiana and USC Upstate and both outings were tightly contested affairs. South Alabama earned a 70 – 68 win over the Lions and snuck away with an 83 – 79 win against the Spartans to land their spot in the semis.
The line setters are expecting another close game with a 3-point spread posted although the Jags have posted a 15 – 2 record at home this season.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
The Coastal defense is certainly the strength of this team but the Jaguars know a thing about playing defense as well. Both programs have seen more unders hit the board this year but the Chants’ offense has sprung to life of late. Coming off an 84-point effort against FGCU, the Chants have now hit 6 of their last 8 overs.
In the opening round win over MDES, the Chants got 32 of their 66 points from bench players and Rude Williams is continuing to be a stud as a sub. Williams is second on the team averaging 14.4 PPG and his spark off the pine has provided big dividends for head coach Cliff Ellis. Ellis has been here since 2007 and this is the 10th season he has gotten Coastal to a post-season appearance of some sort.
Williams played 30 minutes in the opening game and led the way with 18 points while the Chants leading scorer Vince Cole landed just about on his average with 15 points to lead the starters. The defense held MDES to 16 of 60 from the floor (26.7%) and obviously holding any opponent to 42 points is usually going to get any team the W.
Rudi Williams once again led the way with 24 points in the win over FGCU to help get Coastal to the semis and we expect he’ll be just as influential tonight as they git the road for the first time in this event.
South Alabama Jaguars
The Jags have enjoyed home-cookin’ all season but that is nothing new when it comes to college hoops. At 15 – 2, that is quite an impressive run of results in this building, and it is certainly how this team landed any type of post-season invitation.
South Alabama knows when to rely on their defense as well, and you see the rankings tell us as much. The Jags are ranked 28th in the nation holding opponents to 62.8 PPG and they also sit in the 29th spot holding opponents to 40% shooting from the floor.
The Jags won their first game at home in this event on the strength of a Javon Franklin late layup as he ended the game with 17 points in 36 minutes of time on the court. Franklin and Tyrell Jones each came away with 17 points which was a surprise considering Jones usually only takes in about 5 points a game.
Leading scorer Charles Manning Jr. only found 10 points in the opening game and he completely disappeared in game 2 last time out against USC Upstate. Manning only landed a pair of points from 8 minutes of time played for the LSU transfer who is playing his final season. This team has somehow managed to withstand 12 total points from their leading scorer over two games but if that continues into tonight this team is done IMO.

Free Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs. South Alabama Jaguars NCAAB Betting Prediction:
The Manning scoring issue is a concern because the Jags cannot rely on their depth to get things done. I have Coastal Carolina to cover the +3 and if they win outright I will not be shocked in the least.
