This series is usually a great one to watch. Two of the best teams in the league fighting it out.
Gonzaga can shut up a lot of folks if they win this one easily, they may want to too.
BYU Cougars:
The WCC is a top heavy league, usually Gonzaga and that’s it in terms of the NCAAs. In that tier behind the Zags is BYU who is off to a good start in league play at 3-1, just a road loss to St. Mary’s. If they could steal a win tonight they would be in the driver’s seat because pretty much nobody beats Gonzaga at the kennel. This BYU group is tough and talented as usual. They are going to have to play a great game to get that critical victory.
Kyle Collinsworth is one of the most versatile players in the country but he is not the only one filling up stats sheets for the Cougars this year. Chase Fischer and Nick Emery combine Collinsworth to give BYU a super productive backcourt and Kyle Davis is averaging near a double-double while enforcing the paint. He can even make a rare three point shot – 4 of 6. This teams wants to outscore everybody and they have the horses to do it.
Gonzaga Bulldogs:
This Gonzaga team is not as good as last year’s. That group has amazing balance between the front and backcourt thanks to a trio of senior perimeter players. Be that as it may they may still be the best team in the WCC.
That is because the Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis are fantastic and their games really complement each other, especially with Przemek Karnowski out.
Wiltjer is the leading scorer. A long shooter who can get good looks pretty much whenever he wants and can kill you from any spot on the floor. Sabonis is averaging 18/11 and has amazing instincts for the ball around the rim.
In any game where their guard play is average the Zags should win in conference this year. Still this one could be exciting.
