Butler Bulldogs
The Big East runs deep this season. Lose a game you shouldn’t and find yourself on a losing streak.
That’s the situation Butler finds itself in now. The Bulldogs had climbed to #5 in the AP Poll by last week with just one loss on its resume — by a point, on the road, to #2 Baylor.

But Butler dropped a home game to Seton Hall. The Pirates have a talented team this season but it’s usual to see Butler lose any game at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Myles Powell, Seton Hall’s splendid senior, had twenty-nine points and was the most dominant player on the floor, as he often is.
Then Butler went on the road and lost to DePaul, 79–66. It’s hard to win on the road in a conference deep with NCAA Tournament hopefuls; all the more reason to win the games you ought to win and defend home court.
Now the Bulldogs head to Villanova with a two-game losing streak to play another game that will be a coin toss, at best.
Seniors Kamar Baldwin and Sean McDermott may be the high scorers but junior point guard Aaron Thompson plays more than anybody.
Thompson isn’t a shooter (he’s attempted twelve three-pointers all season and made just one of them) but he averages over five assists per game and close to four rebounds. To his credit, he scores his 6.7 points per game efficiently enough for someone who doesn’t shoot the ball well, shooting .489 from the field.
Villanova Wildcats
Villanova, meanwhile, has been taking care of business with three consecutive victories at home against Georgetown, DePaul and Connecticut. This will be ‘Nova’s fourth consecutive home game before beginning a road-heavy final stretch.
The ‘Cats actually won on the road before it began its home stand, beating Creighton in Omaha. So give them a four-game winning streak heading into this game.
A pair of freshman putting up double-digit points per game have lifted Villanova. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Justin Moore are both averaging between ten and eleven points per game. Robinson-Earl, who came into this season ranked #15 in the Recruitments Services Consensus Index (RSCI) in the Class of 2019, is also averaging 9.5 rebounds per game and has five double-doubles on the year.
Those two give ‘Nova some scoring punch after the three more experienced leading scorers of Saddiq Bey, Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels. Butler will have a lot to contend with.
One guy who hasn’t developed into a threat is junior forward Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree, who arrived on campus over two years ago now ranked inside the RSCI’s Top 100 and played important minutes in Villanova’s National Championship run.
But he’s regressed since then. A physical defender and rebounder, Cosby-Roundtree has never been a gifted offensive player at the level Villanova competes at. He’s played just over six minutes per game this season and didn’t appear in ‘Nova’s win over the weekend.
