There was a point in time, earlier this century, when both Boston College and Wake Forest were prominent national programs.
Boston College became a member of the ACC from the Big East when it was in the middle of its fine years under Head Coach Al Skinner. Wake Forest has long been apart of the ACC and during the same years was enjoying big-time success under the late Skip Prosser.
Things look a little different for both programs now. Between them, only Wake Forest has made any of the last nine NCAA Tournaments, in 2017 when it lost in the First Four.
Boston College Eagles
The Eagles’ season began on November 6 in Chestnut Hill, where Boston College defeated Wake Forest, 77–70.
BC got sixty points from its top three scorers: Derryck Thornton, Nik Popovich and Jay Heath. It turned the ball over just six times all evening, to Wake Forest’s seventeen, in earning its first conference win in the first game of the season.
It won on the road against South Florida in the very next game before stumbling with four losses in a row after it got into the thick of its non-conference schedule.
It dropped games to DePaul, Saint Louis, Richmond and Northwestern, three of which were played at Chestnut Hill. It recovered to win a one-point game at Notre Dame, making it 2–0 in conference play, and then finished the non-conference with three consecutive victories.
Its has started exclusive conference season with one win in four, defeating Virginia (without its leading scorer, Thornton) at home but losing at Duke, vs Georgia Tech and at Syracuse by a combined seventy-four points.
Thornton, who started his collegiate career at Duke as the thirteenth-ranked freshman in the class of 2015, scored just four points in the Eagles’ last game at Syracuse and has back-to-back single-digit performances after hitting double-digits in ten of his first thirteen games this season. Still, he’s on track for his first double-digit scoring season of his disappointing collegiate career.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake Forest didn’t get the benefit of a fast start but did pick up non-conference victories over Davidson and Xavier, which is a talented team out of the Big East with two big-time scorers in Paul Scruggs and Naji Marshall.
The Demon Deacons’ only conference victory came on the road, against the Pittsburgh Panthers. They have lost each of their last three: vs Florida State, at Duke and vs Virginia Tech, all by double-digits.
