Physically, Auburn is the favorite in this matchup. Bruce Pearl has more big, strong, athletic bodies to throw at Kansas, especially on the frontline.
Such was also the case on Thursday afternoon against New Mexico State, but Auburn nearly gave away a double-digit lead in the second half with sloppy play in the backcourt and questionable decision-making all around.
As shaky as the Tigers were down the stretch, they survived the play another game, and a different game this is. It’s a good matchup for Auburn because it won’t be nervous against KU like it perhaps was against a little guy like NMSU, nor will it be intimidated. It’s a good opportunity to prove itself against a power that it, frankly, should beat.
That said, Kansas is coming together. The ceiling isn’t there for this team with just Dedric Lawson and a band of hustle guys on the frontline. The guards are good but they’re young, only because so many of them have been thrown into their current roles due to injuries.
The Jayhawks gave Northeastern a whooping in the first round. At one point late in the second half, the Jayhawks had more paint points than the Huskies had total point. I don’t know if that stat withstood garbage time.
The bigs alongside Lawson have as little talent as I ever recall a Kansas team having; again, it’s because the guys playing are only doing so out of necessity. That said, David McCormack, KJ Lawson, and Mitch Lightfoot deserve a lot of credit for the improvements they have made from the start of the season to now.
Plus, Lawson will be the best player on the floor. He’s a sleeper NBA prospect because he’s so smooth and simple; I see some Tim Duncan in his game.
If the guards step up and play with Auburn’s more experienced backcourt and the trio of hustle bigs frustrate Auburn a bit up front, KU can most definitely win this game.
CBB Betting Trends:
- AUB are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 Sat. games.
- KU are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 neutral site games.
- Over is 10-4 in KU last 14 overall.
- Over is 12-5-1 in KU last 18 non-conference games.
Free Auburn Tigers vs. Kansas Jayhawks NCAAB Prediction: Lawson is the difference.
This is a hard game for me to call, though I don’t necessarily expect it to be close. Either Auburn’s talent plays and wipes out KU or the Jayhawks win with superior synergy and the best player on the floor. At this point, I lean Lawson.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: KU ATS
NCAAB Free Score Prediction: Auburn 72 – Kansas 78
