SEC regular-season finale action tips on Saturday as the Arkansas Razorbacks visit the Tennessee Volunteers. After several peaks and valleys, the Vols and Razorbacks have established themselves as elite programs with conference tournament play approaching.
Tennessee has won eight of nine to sit one game back of SEC leader Auburn. The Vols recently defeated the Tigers 67-62 from home to raise their NCAA tournament stock. Today, UT looks to avenge its 58-48, Feb. 19 setback vs. Arkansas.
Meanwhile, Arkansas is 14-1 since beginning conference life 0-3. Clever adjustments by Eric Musselman have created four Razorback wins vs. top 25 foes during the team’s run. Arkansas also trails Auburn by one game heading into their season finale.
With each side already sporting quarterfinal SEC tournament byes, today’s meeting is a chance to build mental edge for the all-in battles ahead.
Widely considered one of college basketball’s top home teams, Tennessee opens as -6.5 favorites vs. streaking Arkansas.
Arkansas Razorbacks
The Razorbacks held LSU off 77-76 on Thursday to end regular season home matters a winner. Since beginning their 14-1 tear, Arkansas has defeated Kentucky, Tennessee, Auburn, West Virginia, and LSU to rate among CBB’s most feared postseason offerings.
Personally, I can see this Razorbacks lineup making a deep SEC and NCAA Tournament run behind JD Notae, Jaylin Williams and Stanley Umude. When any of those three pressure opposing defenses, Arkansas becomes difficult in every situation. This particular group prides itself on defense and toughness -attributes which overcome sheer talent as bodies carry the 30-plus game ledger into March.
While home court advantage is huge in college basketball, Arkansas’ defense should travel to Knoxville on Saturday. The Razorbacks smothered Tennessee 58-48 from home two weeks ago.
Arkansas averages 106.4 points per 100 possessions and allows 93.2. The Hogs shoot 44/31/75 and make a living from the foul line using frequent penetration. Arkansas’ pace ranks 27th overall, a speed which should keep the Vols engaged on every possession.
Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee has notched impressive wins over Kentucky and Auburn in recent weeks to prove as dangerous as any team in America. The Vols stand 17-1 from home, where national powers have fallen all season.
Rick Barnes and Co. just registered a ho-hum 75-68 road win vs. UGA. That loss broke Tennessee’s 3-1 ATS run, but did not diminish the group’s dominant aura from Thompson-Boling Arena.
While the Vols aren’t as hot as Arkansas, UT’s current 8-1 streak -highlighted by two top-5 wins- places Tennessee on par with the visiting Razorbacks for Saturday’s contest that could be an SEC tournament semifinal or final preview.
I tend to think of Auburn as overrated, and can easily see Arkansas and UT vie for conference supremacy, if the brackets align. Both programs have proven they can handle the Tigers and UK Wildcats.
Tennessee averages 105.2 points per 100 possessions and allows 90.2. The Vols shoot 42/34/72% and are becoming a model of two-way efficency. Kennedy Chandler and Zakai Zeigler are perhaps the best 1-2 point guard tandem across the board. It is highly unlikely that Tennessee will lay another hideous offensive performance this weekend.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Arkansas is 18-11-1 ATS this season.
- Arkansas is 8-1-1 ATS in its last ten contests.
- Arkansas is 6-2 ATS Away this season.
- Arkansas is 11-5-1 ATS vs. the SEC this season.
- Tennessee is 3-3 ATS in its last six contests.
Free Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Tennessee Volunteers NCAAB Betting Prediction: Arkansas Razorbacks ATS
I think Tennessee is going to edge this contest vs. red-hot Arkansas. The Vols are a different animal entirely while playing before their rabid fans. That stated, it would be a feat if Rick Barnes and Co. handle the Razorbacks by eight fat points -I just don’t see it happening. It’s also nowhere near a stretch to lay cash on Arkansas putting the second L on UT’s glossy home record this weekend.
For the sake of sound judgement, however, I’ll take Arkansas to beat the spread, and UT to win SU, as these elite groups head into ‘one-and-done’ territory.
