After surviving the play in game against Vanderbilt, the Wichita State Shockers meet with the 6th seeded Arizona Wildcats in the Round of 64.
Wichita used their impressive defensive performance to slow the Commodores down and will have to do the same thing here as the Wildcats really like to run and gun.
Wichita State Shockers
The Shockers won the regular season in the MVC, but their conference tourney appearance lasted very little time as they were upset and bounced by Northern Iowa leaving their NCAA Tournament hopes hanging in the balance.
However, they were given an at large, but forced to play in the play in game, where they dominated Vanderbilt on the defensive end. With the game tied 30-30 after the first half, the Shockers came out of the gates in the 2nd half with a ton of pressure, en route to a 13-0 run. Things got dicey late, but the Shockers never gave up the lead.
The Shockers will need that same defensive mentality as they held the Commodores to just 30% shooting and closed out on shooters holding Vandy to just 3 of 19 shooting.
Offensively, Baker and Van Fleet were the two leaders for the Shockers, each with 14 points. They’ll need even better shooting performances in this one as this one expects to be a little bit higher scoring.
Arizona Wildcats
This Arizona team has been extremely strange this season. They are certainly better than a 6th seed, but this isn’t the same Arizona team we’ve seen in the past that was a 1 or 2 seed.
Which makes them very interesting. They have the talent to make a run, but a matchup like this could be tough for them.
Arizona battled for the top spot in the Pac-12 all season long, but eventually had to settle for 3rd place. They took the 1 seed, Oregon, to the brink, but eventually fell to them.
Arizona averages 81.2 points per game as this team can really get on runs and never stop throughout the entire game. They’ll play through F Ryan Anderson, who has been their leading scoring for a majority of the year. Anderson averages a double double with 15.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.
