The Washington Wizards came up short in their last matchup with the Chicago Bulls. They led for portions of that game, but a terrible third quarter of play was the beginning of the end for the team.
While in Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia 76ers are coming off their second loss in a row, at the hands of the Houston Rockets.
The Washington Wizards have now dropped two games in a row after coming away on the losing end of a close loss to the Chicago Bulls. Washington continued making it a game through 4 quarters of play, but a slip up in the third ultimately cost them the match.
Washington scored only 14 points in the period, and that came back to hurt them in the end because they had to play catch-up for the rest of the night.
It also didn’t help that Washington just couldn’t reply on their bench unit.
Through the first 9 games of the season, the teams reserves have easily been the worst in the entire league. Marcus Thornton went 4-14 from the field last game, while Jason Smith went -22 in only 17 minutes of playing time.
That was the only reason Washington couldn’t come away victorious. And it’s continued to plague this team through the early portions of the 2016-17 campaign.
It seems every time the starters have a lead, they go to the bench unit, only to have them give it up. That’s just not going to cut it if this teams plans on beating Philly.
Although the 76ers are less talented, they have more depth then Washington.
That means the Wizards have got to get their starters going. John Wall has got to beast on Philadelphia’s point guard tandem of Sergio Rodriguez and T.J. McConnell.
They just aren’t big enough to deal with the physicality Wall plays with, so John has got to continue attacking them when the opportunities arise.
That also means Markieff Morris has got to step up as well, as he’s going to be matched up with Ersan Ilyasova and Dario Saric. Keef and Wall have got themselves a nice matchup this week, so that means looks for them to go off against Philly.
The Philadelphia 76ers are coming off their worst loss of the season after giving up 115 points to the Houston Rockets.
Their defensive efforts just weren’t there, as they allowed Houston to score 38 points in only the first quarter. From there, the Rockets just kept piling on the points as they came out on top, with the final score 115-88.
Now a lot of the issues did have to do with their defense, but offense also continues to be a struggle for the team. They shot a putrid 37.8% from the field, that’s just not going to cut it.
I understand the teams dealing with injuries but shooting only 37.8% is just unacceptable. That’s not going to get you many wins, and for a team that cannot defend, they need to score efficiently. Jahlil Okafor shot just 2 for 11 on the night, while starting point guard Sergio Rodriguez went 1-8 from the field.
Those two are some of the best options Philly has got to score. So with them shooting such a terrible percentage it really kills the offense. That cannot happen next game.
The Wizards don’t have the scoring off the bench that Philly has, so the 76ers have got to use that to their advantage, because Washington’s scoring tends to fall of when their reserves enter game.
That means Philly has got to feast on the Wizards second unit.
Jason Smith is going to be tasked with guarding Jahlil Okafor on the low block.
That means Philly has got to make it a conscious effort in getting him the ball in the post, because Jason Smith is not going to be able to stop him from scoring.
